unable to xfr files from notebook to desktop

I want to transfer files from my media center notebook to my XP pro desktop.
I used a cross over cable to connect both and set up a network (direct
connect) between both. didn't work. Tried MS Groove, but unable to xfr b/c I
think I am off line on the desktop. I did files & settings xfr wizard except
I didn't get the Dell XP disk, and when I choose xfr method it doesn't allow
"direct cable" on the old computer. New computer wants to use a floppy - but
notebook doesn't have a floppy. I thought it would be simple and it is
frustrating. Can I use the internet modem and internet router to connect
between them? Arrgh!

did you setup file & print sharing, did you create a profile on the desktop
to be able to login.

Yes to both. I spent 2 hours with my ISP service to help and we got nowhere
with both of them dialing into both systems. I used crossover cable direct
from comp to comp and then from comp to router to wireless. Any other
thoughts?
