unable to write to DVD/CD

I have a Dell 8300 running XP Pro. Unlike Win ME I cannot save directly to
my recordable media. I have a DVD ROM and an NEC 2100a DVD +RW. When
attempting to write to either re-writable DVD's and CD's an error message
states 'access denied'. Additionally, the PC does not recognise that a DVD
is in the NEC drive and shows zero bytes. Most annoying of all, it appears
that I cannot directly save from the net to either removable media. I have
to save to the hard drive first. Anyone, please?

Were you able to successfully burn DVDs or CDs in the past on the same
machine? If you were saving directly to optical disks with ME it was
because packet-writing software was installed. ME had/has no native CD
burning capability, and XP has no native DVD burning capability.
