Unable to surf issue

The Question

Hi guys,

I sometimes encounter this scenario. can anyone identify what exactly
is the problem:
broadband
-Modem is powered, dsl led stable, lan led stable/blinking (ok)
- can login to isp (authenticated)
- can ping default gateway & dns server
- proxy setting ok in explorer.
- even dns settings placed in tcp/ip

??? but still cannot surf the internet. I.E. says pages cannot be
loaded... is it something to do with any services that should be
running in the background to link the broadband connection to the web
browser? connection is fine, just that the pc cannot surf, but ping is
ok. can even ping www.yahoo.com.

any ideas. welcome any help
thank you

What is the virus/malware status of the machine? Be sure it is clean:

Firewall blocking ?.

The Question

Firewall & antivirus is disabled/absent.
No obvious spyware or toolbars installed.
PC from a clean installation, but is updated to Service Pack 2.
Some cases the user can surf while in SP 1 then when he upgrades to SP
2 he cannot surf.

Update the NIC drivers then. Never get drivers from Windows Update. Get
them from:

1. The card mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM
computer (HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the
drivers.

I've been having this problem since updating to SP2. If I uninstall SP2,
both Intra and Internet works fine. Network troubleshooter states all is
fine, and I can ping other computers on my network as well as the Net.

I think it has something to do with the Windows Firewall, but as yet haven't
fround the problem.
