Unable to start Windows XP

Windows XP hangs up after displaying the opening screen. It will not advance
to the Welcome screen; the screen just goes blank. This all started after
automatic updates for McAfee VirusScan and Privacy Service were downloaded
and installed. A restart was required and that's when this happened; and it
won't restart in any mode. I have tried them all. Is there anything else
that can be done? Could my hard drive have crashed? Help!

Hi Phil, My pc is Packard Bell, and when the Packard Bell logo page starts
and asks if you want to start in different modes, i hold the key for as long
as needed untill the logo page goes to black, that is the only way it will
start, hope this helps

Have you tried booting into safe mode and uninstalling these programs?

Yes. I have tried every mode available including all of the safe mode and
nothing works. In the safe mode, 24 lines of info concerning various
drivers appear on the screen and then it just sits there. None of the
restart mode options will move to the next screen.

If your system hangs at the following driver file when trying to start in
safe mode, you may need to reinstall your operating system;
Windows\system32\DRIVERS\atigkaf.sys
The registry file system has been corrupted.
You might still be able to get your saved documents afterward.
