Unable to shut down MSN Messenger.

Rusty

I have just upgraded to windows XP from WinME. I've
noticed a problem with MSN Messenger. I log in fine, it
doesn't automatically me in, I sign in as I notmally
would. However, when I try to shut the program down, it
says:

"Thereare other applications currently using features
provided by MSN MEssager. You must close these other
applications before you can exit MSN Messenger. These
applications may include Outlook, Outlook Express, MSN
Explorer and Internet Explorer."

The problem is, I don't use the majority of those programs
and I then have to go into control alt delete to get ridof
it. Does anyone know how to get the program to simply
exit when you click on "exit"?

Greetings Rusty,

Do you have Norton Antivirus 2003 installed? Norton added a new "instant messaging scanning"
feature to Norton Antivirus 2003, which can conflict with Messenger and cause this behavior.
To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon in the System
Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click Options, then
Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.
