Unable to setup home network sharing

I hope someone may be able to offer a (probably simple) explanation why I
cannot network my pc and laptop. I am just trying to use an ethernet cable
to connect the 2 computers, internet connection sharing works fine on the
client laptop, but I cannot access any shared drives or printers on the
other computer.

When I go to "My Network Places" then "View Workgroup Computers" I get the
following message on both computers (after about 60 seconds of waiting)
......

Mshome is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network
resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have
access permissions. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently
available.

Any help would be most appreciated as it is becoming tiresome having to
email stuff from one computer to the other.

Hi,

How are you connecting the two computers with the Ethernet cable? Are you
doing direct connection or through a Router or a switching hub?

I am just using a straight ethernet connection. In the past it has never
been a problem just connecting a laptop and connectivity is there
immediately. Each time I try something I always get a message saying that I
might not have permission, or that the MSHOME network is not accessible.

Hi,

Well, if you are directly connecting the two PC`s with the ethernet cable
from their network interface cards, you need to use a cross cable. If you
are using a hub or a router, then you use a straight cable.

For a cross connect from port to port, you just need to setup static IP
address offset by one, like 168.192.1.2 , 168.192.1.3 with the same subnet
mask 255.255.255.0 then the two computers can see each other.

Now with a hub or router, use a straight cable and they should see each
other with no problem. Sometimes firewalls prevent each from seeing each
other though.

Something's odd. For a direct pc to pc connection you need a cross-over
cable. If connecting both boxes to a hub/switch/router then a standard
patch cable is used.
