unable to see one machine's shares

I have a small home network: Moe (WinXP Home), Larry (WinXP Home) and
Curly (Win98SE) - connected via a D-Link DI-604 Router. The network
works fine, all machines connect successfully to the internet via an
ADSL modem and each machine successfully pings one another including
the router.

All 3 machines can see each machine in network neighbourhood. All
machines are setup to share a folder. The shares of Larry and Curly
can be shared amongst all three machines. However the shares of Moe
cannot be seen, even though the computer icon can be seen in network
neighbourhood.

I have ensured that Moe has the following:
-firewall turned off
-MS file and printer sharing service on
-Client for MS Networks service on
-folder shared properly
-guest account turned on


Still, unable to see Moe's shares on the other two machines. When I
click on Moe from Larry or use Run "\\moe\share" I get the message:
"\\moe is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource".

When I do the same from the Win98SE box (Curly) I get "You must supply
a password to make this connection. Resource \\moe\IPC$".

I am stuck, unknowing where to go from here. Any ideas greatly
appreciated.

restrictanonymous.

The above articles refer to Windows 2000. Remember WinXP is NT V5.1, and Win2K
is NT V5.0.

Have you used the Registry Editor before? If not, it's a scary tool, but it's
pretty simple once you get used to it. Here are a couple articles that might

Just remember to backup the key (create a registry patch) for
[HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa] before making any changes, if
appropriate.

From the Annoyances article:
You can create a Registry patch by opening the Registry Editor, selecting a
branch, and choosing Export from the File menu. Then, specify a filename, and
press OK. You can then view the Registry patch file by opening it in Notepad
(right-click on it and select Edit). Again, just double-click on a Registry
patch file (or use Import in the Registry Editor's File menu) to apply it to the
registry.

Chuck...that did not work. Changed key from 1 to zero and still no
luck. Any other ideas?

In moe's shared folder, is there any files to share, if there is not
that might give the error message you report. Happened to
me, I couldn't access the shared folder from my winxphome
computer on my win98se comp because there was no files
in my shareddocs folder I was trying to share. There were
other folders in my shareddocs folder, but the other folders
did not allow me to share the shareddocs folder.

Larry,

Make sure the browser service is running on Larry and Moe. Control Panel -
Administrative Tools - Services. Verify that the Computer Browser, and the
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, services both show with Status = Started. Turn the
Browse Master off on Curly.

Make sure that you have shareable folders on Larry and Moe, not just trying to
share "C:\Program Files", "C:\Windows", or "My Documents".

Make sure there's no firewall involved, now or in the past.
