Unable to Open User Accounts Icon in Control Panel

Sam

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 computer with windows XP Pro installed. I want
to change the name of a profile but cannot get the User Accounts Icon to
open. I went to the windows\system32 folder and double clicked on the
nusrmgr.cpl file and I still get the same error:

"The filename, directory name, or volume label
syntax is incorrect"

The only action that I have taken that might have caused a problem is the
change that I made from Kelly's web site:

Control Userpasswords2 - Add to Control Panel

In the Control Panel, there is a new Icon named User Accounts2. Any
suggestions would be very much appreciated, Sam.

Sam,

This has nothing to do with adding control userpasswords2. From here, do a
search for nusrmgr.cpl and rename it. Then copy the nusrmgr.cpl from
dllcache to the System32 folder.

Kelly, many thanks for your reply. I attempted your suggestion but it did
not work. I renamed the existing nusrmgr.cpl in the System32 folder, went
to the dllcache folder and did a copy from there to the System32 folder. As
I did this, I received a pop up message that said a file already exist, do
you want to overwrite it? I said yes and then tried open the User Accounts
in the control panel and still received the same error message as before.
When I rename the existing file in the System32 folder, I suspect windows
automatically places another copy in the folder, unless I have some
spyware!! I don't think so though since I am very conservative where I surf
and also keep NAV 2004, BoClean, Adware, and ZAPlus up to date.

Kelly, if you have any other suggestions, would very much appreciate the
information. Thanks, Sam.

Most welcome, Sam. I can only suggest creating another profile to see if
the behavior is re-created. Other than that, the cleanup programs that you
mentioned may not be enough. It takes a combo of them to include:
Ad-Aware, Spybot, CWShredder and HijackThis! Good luck and keep us posted.

Kelly, thanks again for your reply. I ran CWShredder and HiJack this
morning and nothing unusual. One item of note that might be of interest, I
searched the registry for the file name of nusrmgr.cpl and noticed that for
each entry, the DATA column had the following and I am wondering if the
"one" should be present?

%SystemRoot%\\System32\\nusrmgr.cpl, 1

I also tried to open the User Accounts in other profiles, including the
Administrator account and got the same error message. I even ran the
Process Explorer from Sysinternals and the StartUplist (can't remember the
company name) and did not see anything unusual. Kelly, if you have any
other suggestions, especially about my comment about the registry entry, it
would be very much appreciated. Have a good week, Sam.

P.S. what are you doing up at 04:39 in the morning!!

K

Kelly

Most welcome, Sam and thanks for the week wish.)

Yes, the one is norm for the registry, especially if found via the tweak you
added from my site. The one (1) tells it which icon to use.

However, if you are using any HTA blockers, it will cause this behavior. As
you didn't mention it, thought I would do so now. If per chance this is the
case and you are using HTAStop (as an example) enable HTA applications.

Keep us posted, hope this helps and good luck, Sam!

Hi Kelly, you are very correct!! I used the HTAstop to permit the HTA
applications and now the User Accounts in the control panel works as it is
supposed to. I had forgotten all about this little program. It is amazing
that you have some much knowledge about computers. Many thanks for your
patience and help. I have been talking to some of my computer neighbors in
the last few days and some are having the same problem that I have been
experienced with the User Accounts. Cannot wait to share your information.

Again, many thanks for sharing your extensive computer knowledge. I read
the newsgroups daily and always watch for your responses that I can save as
"keepers." Your web site is also very outstanding and a place I visit
frequently. Best wishes, Sam.

You are very welcome, Sam and thank you so much for the smile.) Your
words are kind. Hope all goes well for your neighbors, too.
