Unable to join windows 2000 workstation to domain

when i try to join i get the following error:

network identification
the following error occurred validating . this condition may be caussed by a
dns lookup problme. the specidfied domain either does not exists or could
not be contacted.

it is a windows 2000 domain controller.

does anyone have suggestions on how to resolve this problem? thanks
