unable to install programs?

I have worked on many computers over the years and have come up
against many problems. I have one problem now that has me stumped. I
have a friend whom I was trying to help install norton systemworks on
her computer. I get the boot selection box when the cd is inserted,
but when I click on install the systemworks, I get an hour glass for a
second and then nothing.

I started checking by trying to install something else. ACDSee32 acts
like it is going to but disappears after about 20 seconds. I tried a
couple other problems, but they also just disappear after they look
like they are going to install. There were a couple little programs
which would install so it will install smaller programs. Apparently
there is a file or system resource that is missing or corrupted that
these other programs need to install. I just don't know.

I tried in safe mode. Can't install a thing there.
I tried turning off thru the task manager all unnecessary programs
and tried installing. No luck.

If I could get an error I could probably figure it out, but there is
no error message, they just disappear after you click install.

I am thinking of doing a repair on the system and hope things work
after that, but thought I would ask here first.

Anyone with any ideas?

Installation can be started automatically when the CD is inserted. (Failure
from what you said.)

Did you try Start > Run > Browse and then navigate to the CD and run
setup/install?

Did you open Explorer and navigate to the CD drive and select setup/install
from there?

On the possibility that it's the Windows Installer that's actually failing -
since this is happening with two different apps - perhaps the page at this
link will help.

Thanks for the suggestion, but apparently you did not read my post
properly. Yes, I can get the installers to start the installation, but
they die silently after 10-20 seconds. Norton opens a box with some
options for installing when the disc is inserted. The installation
just dies without an error message or any other notice, just nothing.
The programs actuall;y act like they will install, but they just
vanish after awhile.

I have searched google and here, everyone else gets a message or error
if an installation fails. If I received an error or message I could
probably figure out my problem.

Thanks
