Web-based news, huh? Well, why didn't you say ;)

Because the groups *aren't* really "web-based news". CDO is just a web
interface to Usenet newsgroups. It's a bad interface. That's why we try
to teach posters about setting up a real newsreader instead.

Yuck! But aren't "newsgroups" and "newsreaders" and "news servers" so old
school UNIX-like? Surely MickeySoft has a better way than to have to rely
on such archaic 80's technologies?

BTW, just curious about what news server Microsoft uses? Is there a native
one that runs under Windoze? If there is, what's required to set one up?
Will it run under XP or does one need a server?

Hi Kelly

What is this CDO I keep hearing about?

When I Google it, I turn up some link to "Collaboration Data Objects"
but how could that be used to post to newsgroups?

JS:
In OE and maybe in Moz. TB as well, you can find out whether a person is
posting via CDO by looking up the Properties of their header, then Details.
CDO usually tells you a lot about the sophistication of the poster! Go
gently with them.

Steve [reading newsgroups]: Hey Bill. Usenet is really simple. It's all
in plain text (remember that?) and it's, like, an RFC standard.
Bill: What?! OK. Let's create a sort of Usenet registry, so everything
is hard to use and in binary. Then we'll add a bunch of proprietary
extensions which only work with Windows and Outlook, and license the
technology, so everybody has to pay me money to exchange information
with their peers. Then when the users forget all about the change,
they'll think we innovated the whole caboodle.
Steve: Blimey. They don't call you chief bullshit architect for nothing!

The server's welcome response is:

200 NNTP Service 6.0.3790.206 Version: 6.0.3790.206 Posting Allowed

Googling for those numbers turns up a critical security vulnerability
(naturally) applicable to NT4/2000/2003 server OS's and Exchange server.
So they're probably using Exchange on Windows servers.
