unable to boot xp (unable to update registry)

Patrick

Even after running the restore from the disc I cannot get into safe mode
either. No restore points again. States it is unable to update the registry
and to contact the manufacture, then shuts cpu down.
*Goes up th the windows xp screen the stops*
This happened after running a trend micro virus software
Any ideas?
Thanks Patrick

your not giving enough info for a responsibile answer.

What version of windows home, pro or what?
how are you attempting to get into safe mode?
and what exactly does (running the restore from the disc) mean?
What disk? is it a Xp install cd or a supplied restore cd?

and what does the following mean?
*Goes up th the windows xp screen the stops* are you talking about the
windows splash screen (ie shows the windows logo, next screen is the login
screen)

There is nothing in a VALID trend micro antivirus software that will cause
problems like this, unless you got a corrupted version from a untrusted
source.
and by running it, do you mean you did a system scan, if so did it find some
errors?
what exactly did the software do, error messages or ANY kind of popups
saying a problem had been found, or no problems etc.

Windows home XP
F8 to try safe mode still get same message
System recovery disc from HP trying to use the restore fuction without
deleting data (photos)
Up to the spash screen the I get the error message about not being able to
update the registry
I let the program run in safe mode - it was running on the dos screen i
guess and it scanned for a while then the screen was blank and cpu was locked
up, I restarted the cpu just to get up to the user password screen (i never
had that before) and of course I didnt have the password so i could not get
back into xp. Now i just get the error message and my restore portion is
empty on the hard drive. Im using my older hp for a back up. Thanks and
sorry for not giving enough info.

Here is what I would suggest...Remove the hard drive from the computer and
change the pins in the back to slave ,then hook it up to your old system and
copy the photos and any other personal files you wish to save
to the older HP's Hard drive...
When that is done put the pins on the back of the HD back to their original
positions and reinstall into the system it came out of originally.
Now use your HP System Recovery Discs and reinstall XP letting it format the
drive in the process in order to have a new " as 1st Purchased" system.
Be sure you have all of the installation media for every program that you
have purchased since then if you aim to re install them .

it sounds like you had a virus that corrupted some system files, the not able
to enter windows afterwards is a big clue, the AV software may have deleted
those infected files and the system needs them to operate.

I'm suprised the restore without format (and thanks for the details) didn't
restore
your ability to boot into windows, now, I agree with Peter, one method of
repair is to use another pc to access the drive to get the user data off,
then use the restore disk to format and reinstall your os to as new
condition, as it sounds really hosed.

Thanks everyone . This is my second time going threw this and I already
installed a new hard drive into the newer Hp because this happened before and
av didnt catch it again. I agree the virus software probley deleted the
infected files and I have to start all over again. I have an adapter that
lets me conect to the HD and again thanks for everybody's help.
