I have a .tif file that can't be deleted (Windows says 'file in use'), but
it's not. Anyone know anything about the freeware utility 'MoveOnBoot'?
TIA

Safe Mode? Dos Mode?
Either should allow you to delete the file.

I think CopyItAnyway has a file remove feature too. You know the file
may be now in a physically damaged part of your disk. Copy It Anyway
is here and was in part made to deal with physically damaged media:

Move all other files in the folder to another one, then delete the folder.
This worked for me on several occasions

The simplest, easiest, and sure-fire way is to boot into REAL DOS
with a floppy or CD, and then DEL that booger. Of course, you might
have to change it's attributes with an ATTRIB file on the floppy.
In DOS one can wreak magic untouchable by Windows.

I used to do it this way until someone in acf recommended Unlocker. It puts
an item in the right-menu which allows you to unlock the awkward file
without invoking DOS. I use it regularly.

Hi PanHandler - the following is from my Blog, Defending Your Machine, addy
in my Signature below.

"Sometimes the tools below will find files which they are unable to delete
because they are in use.

A program called Copylock, here, http://noeld.com/programs.asp?cat=misc can
aid in the process of "replacing, moving, renaming or deleting one or many
files which are currently in use (e.g. system files like comctl32.dll, or
virus/trojan files.)"

Another is Killbox, here: http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip

A third which is a bit different but often very useful is Delete Invalid
File, here: http://www.purgeie.com/delinv.htm which handles invalid/UNC
file/folder name deleting, rather than the in use problem.

A fourth useful program is Unlocker, here:
..http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/ " Simply right click the folder or file
and select Unlocker. If the folder or file is locked, a window listing of
lockers will appear. Simply select the lockers and click Unlock and you are
done!" Works as advertised and is particularly helpful in identifying
malware components which are 'protecting' each other."

Not for those running W9x or ME though. 80(>

With W9x or Me you have the option of booting into DOS and deleting it
from there. You cannot do this on WinXP.

You can if your file system is Fat32.

Does that thing work with Firefox?

Since you point your browser to it, it'll work with any browser that
cab be pointed at a server. I still use the original, Proxomitron,
and wouldn't go web surfing without it.
