UMAX scanner won't work with XP!!!! PLEASE HELP ME

Pat

I have a UMAX 610P scanner, and the software disk.
windows XP will not allow the disk to be downloaded. This
was my cousins computer (e machine T2042 )and I know he
had it working together at one time, unfortunatly he has
passed away. I get a message when trying to download
disk "VMM32.vxd missing or corrupted. Is there a driver
or software I can download to make the scanner work with
my computer? I am no computer wizard and understand only
basics, I have been learning on my own by trial and error.
any help would be much appreciated. Thanks Pat

Trying to get parallel port scanners to work with XP has been problematic
since it was in beta. If Umax isn't supporting the scanner in XP, in other
words offers no drivers that can resolve this, your best bet is to purchase
a new scanner. Given how inexpensive they are you are far better off doing
that than spending the enormous amount of time you will spend by trial and
error trying to get your current scanner to work.

If I had to guess what your cousin did, I would think XP was an upgrade over
a previous OS. With the scanner already installed on that OS, when he did
the upgrade, setup, not finding a means of installing an XP driver, simply
went with the old configuration.

I don't know why it is not working now or if it simply stopped. It was a
borderline device meaning it might work for awhile and then some change in
the setup, however minor, pushed it over the edge.

If you are going to look into another scanner, check for compatibility with
XP:

Trust me, you will save yourself a lot of trouble and probably get a much
better scanner and a much lower price than was originally paid for the 610P
and it will serve you much better because even if you manage to get it to
function, it's going to be trouble. For one, ultimately, it will fail again
and second, you may get it to work only to find the system starts crashing
for unknown reasons.

I got my UMAX 610P to work with XP by doing a clean install of XP and
using the XP driver only. Go to Control Panel | Scanners & Camera's |
Add Device | Umax | 610p. Do not install any UMAX software or
drivers, because it will fail on the install, and may leave bad things
behind.

My 610p is the model without the power switch. I do not know if the
older model 610p, which has a power switch, will work in XP.

I have my scanner plugged into my parallel port, which I believe is in
ECP+EPP mode (contact me if you need my exact parallel port settings).
I also run an HP Laserjet 4J daisychained off of the Umax 610p with
no problems, as long as I power up the 610p before printing.
