Please help with UMAX Astra 610P

Hello,

I have recently purchased a second hand UMAX Astra 610P parallel port
scanner for my Win98 computer. Unfortunately I can't make it work. It
didn't come with a cable or software. So I purchased a typical printer
parallel port cable and downloaded suitable installation software from
umax.com. The scanner can't be turned on or off. The lamp burns all
the time (I'm not sure if that is good). It has a "Scan"-button on the
front panel and a lock/unlock switch at the back which I don't know
what it is good for. So when I run the Test32.exe program that the
installer put on my system, it says: "Unable to control scanner or Not
Ready - Device Not Found - Error code: 00140e05h - Please make sure
the scanner's power is turned on and the SCSI cable is well
connected."
I would appreciate any comment or advice.
Thank you very much.

The Lock/Unlock switch is to lock the carriage motionless for shipping.
It MUST be unlocked to use the scanner.

Some user manuals can be downloaded at
http://www.umax.com/support

The 600P and 610S manuals are there, much will be common.
