Ultimate Boot CD 4 Win

K

Kram

Greetings,

Just downloaded and tried UBCD4Win v3. Very impressive, it does just about
everything I'd want from a windows boot cd. Huge improvement over earlier
versions and in my mind much better than any of the other windows boot
cd's. This is one you should try,

I recall that the last time I got into this sort of thing (before I
discovered that Linux live cds could do most everything one might need)
the actual building of the BartPE iso file had to be done on an XP
machine -- it couldn't be done on a machine running W2K. Anybody know if
that's the case with this application?

it's just a package that utilizes Bart's PE. But as far as I know
(have not tried for a while) Bart's PE does work on Win2000, it
only needs a XP setup CD because earlier versions of Windows do
not support such a live CD creation. AFAIK there's no way to create
a booting Windows CD based on operating systems earlier than XP.
The PE Builder program (pebuilder.exe) runs on Windows
2000/XP/2003/BartPE. It does not run on Windows NT4/ME/9x.

Is there a reason for this?"

Have played with UBD for win, but its not very ultimate imho. In use it
tries to write to the floppy, and upon finding its write protected it
then crashes. Allowing floppy writes with a possibly infected machine
wouldnt be exactly the smartest move, and theres really no reason to
need to write to the disc. Has its uses but far from ultimate.

It runs on 98, but dont know which version it is..

I use it quite often (version 2.6 I think) and it doesn't exhibit any
problems like this. I have Acronis True Image integrated so I use it to
restore images. It is also easy to clone hard drives using it. I rate it
very highly. I've never tried to access the internet using it, never needed
to, or used it to get rid of viruses. It is good to use on system files etc.
