And what do you, wharf rat, expect from a computer?

Lol, isn't that like asking me what I expect from a woman? You're
leaving out some context, don't you think?

And you're still making the Microsoft-ish error of confusing the
computer with the operating system. The question you're *really* asking
is "What do I expect of an operating system?" and the answer is that
I expect it to manage access to physical devices, multiplex I/O to the
CPU, and be as unobstrusive as possible. Simplex sigillum veri, right?

What so special do you want to do that I possibly never thought of doing?

Useful work, I'd say.

If a serious company decided to use Ubuntu and problems arise, where would
they go? To Mr. Al-Alias? Or this idiot-OP: Maya?

They'd use the source, Luke. Or a paid support contract as with
any other software.

Great Ghu, but you're dumb.

We use Vista Ultimate in our marketing/advertising business and it is
installed on 15 boxes both x32 & x64. We were in on the beta. We
prepared our computers and our staff for using Vista in a productive
mode. We over came any and all initial issues. We find Vista to be the
very best OS available today and our choice of OS's is not limited by
any financial barriers.
I also personally use Vista Ultimate and have no problems with it at all.
Now what is your problem with Vista? Do you have it or even use it?
Which version?

ok Frank, now we talking... my problem with Vista (my apologies to some
who have read this already, as I have posted this before..)

I have a few problems, but one GLARING one, which is a HUGE pain:

I have two HD tv tuners in my machine, which I ordered when purchased
the machine, so the cable guy came to my house to put a card they have
to put in the back of this tuner (equiv. of digital cable box, I'm
paying $10/mo. for it..) but now I can't activate the digital cable-tv
feature in Windows Media Center b/c Vista is not accepting the product
key supplied (it's in a sticker on the machine..)
folks where I bought my machine said it's b/c Vista has gotten corrupted
and I need to re-install it.. (an entire OS that gets corrupted, whoever
heard of such a thing...)

now pls note I'm NOT talking about the Windows activation prod key, but
another one, a 2nd prouduct key on sticker in my machine, specif. for
digital cable TV.. Vista is not accepting this product key; I have to
do a clean re-install, which means wiping out all my data and starting
over.. this is a HUGE pain.. I have tried to back up AppData folder
inside users/<me>/ but when it's done backing it up the one in external
HD to where I copied it is much smaller - by a lot - (I mean less GB)
than the one on my machine, so I can't do the re-install yet...

NOW you know why I'm so pissed; frankly Frank, ;) if this were
happening to you, wouldn't you also be pissed??

thank you..

Frank doesn't worry about data on his Vista computer. All he uses it for is
to play Minesweeper. He already knows that his is always the highest score,
as no one else plays Minesweeper on his mom's computer but him. No need to
save data.

Cheers.

guys, let's be fair.. Frank asked me directly what my problem with

Typical answer form these places.

Certainly but not at Vista. What did Vista do wrong? I'd be all over the
tv people and force them to give me the correct hardware and Vista ready
drivers.
Frank

Oh, as an aside, I have two computers using Hauppauge HD cards,
WinTV-HVR-1600 which currently runs under Windows XP and Vista with
Microsoft's Media Center application, one here at work and the other at
home. Both work perfectly. We have cable TV at both locals. The cards
get both analog and HD (clear QAM).

zachd [MSFT]

Yeah, that can happen to most OSs. One of my least favorite issues in XP
was a system catalog store issue that would 80% of the time require the
system to be rebuilt.

Nobody likes that sort of thing.

I would love to understand how they arrived at that conclusion and what they
specifically feel is corrupt.
(btw, I have posted here what my main problem is with Vista about three
times now, I have yet to receive a response/possible solution form
anyone..)

This isn't a support forum, though, per the Expectations of Service -
"Microsoft does not offer formal support for the communities you'll find
here."
http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#netiquette

I don't think anyone knows enough about your system to second-guess what
people who looked at your system directly told you.

I definitely don't know how they arrived at their conclusion of 'Vista has
gotten corrupted' and potentially would think that's just the lazy "let's
smash it all to bits" approach to problem-solving here, but again - nobody
here is an expert at digital tuner activation (that I'm aware of), so hoping
for support here is not going to work. You might want to turn to some other
channel, such as a a Windows Media Center-centric forum/site, for advice
that is relevant to your problem.

Please do so. If that doesn't resolve your issue by Monday, post back to
your way way old thread (or anything other than this thread, for which you
and I discussing cable cards would be kind of off-subject-topic), and I'll
give it further probably useless thought and potentially hook you up with a
different solution path.

I know absolutely nothing about digital tuner activation and suspect that no
one here does either.

"tv people" -- you mean the cable co.?? the cable co. put the wrong
card and that's why I can't activate it? I don't think so, because:

1) I'm sure cable co. knows what cards to insert in machines..

2) when I start activation process in Media Ctr it first does a lot of
"detecting that you have correct card.." etc.. and all those things
check fine... it's only when I put product key that things go wrong (I
wouldn't get that far if I had the wrong hardware in there..)

my comp manufacturer, they said they have a no. of clients with the same
problem, it was solved by re-installing Vista.. (after sucessfully
convinving the guy I was NOT typing in wrong product key and stuff, he
put me on hold to find out if anybody else had encountered same problem,
when he came back he said, this prob occurs b/c Vista gets corrupted,
you need to re-install...)

and these guys are great, my machine is not Gateway, Dell, or any of
those, it's much lesser-known brand, they have EXCELLENT customer
service, I know some of the guys there by name now.. they are always
very helpful... they wouldn't just tell me anything to get me off the
phone..) it's not a big co. like Dell, etc... they make high-end
machines, extremely fast, they sell mostly to "gamers"....;)

thanks for yr response....

So you're having trouble with a product key from the cable company. I
fail to see the connection with Vista.

If installing a tv card and trying to activate using their key has
corrupted Vista I'd make them fix it! That's ridiculous that just doing
a product key activation would cause the entire OS to be corrupted.
Other than the key not working does the rest of Vista work properly?

Frank, the product key for activating digital cable on Win Media Ctr was
provided with my machine, it does NOT come from the cable co.. it is
on a sticker on the machine, right next to the product key for Windows
Activation
Well, did you try a repair install?

hhmmm.. repair install.. not sure what this entails, have to look into
it, I guess.. but my machine manuf'r recommends a clean re-install...

again, product key for activation of dig. cable feature in Media Ctr
does NOT come from cable co, it comes w/the machine, just like the one
for activating Windows... (and not only this, but researching this
online I found out I will also need the serial no. for the card the
cable co. put in there, I don't have it (since the guy had to leave
after inserting the card b/c I couldn't dig cable feature in Windows..)
so I don't know if they'll have it on record when I call them and ask
them for it.. they might have to come and install a different one.. as
you can see, this is one big huge headache..

there is a screenshot of the sticker here, with the two product keys
(for Windows activation and for dig. cable activation)
http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2959&p=2&cp=3

the one on the RIGHT is the one for digital cable..
this sticker is on the machine itself.. you will see that it says
"digital cable support for Windows Vista"

thank you..

The key is only supplied by OEM's. Our WMC is already activated. No need
to activate. In fact we don't even have an "activation key". So the key
is supplied not by MS directly but from the OEM you purchased your
system from.

yes, it comes from my OEM, but Vista is not accepting it!!!! (although
not sure exactly, how this works... I mean I assume the way it works
is OEM gets it from M$ -- since it's for a M$ product (in this case
Windows Media Center...))

at any rate my OEM's diagnosis (based on their prior experience w/this
problem) is that Vista is not accepting it b/c it's gotten corrupted..

thank you..
