Typing appears very slowly in Win Messenger 5.1

Hello!

I am using Windows Messenger 5.1.0701 and Win XP Service Pack 2 on a new
laptop. When I type my messages in Messenger, the text appears very slowly,
two letters at a time. If I type a long sentence, it takes a very long time
for it to appear in my message box and to be sent to the other person. All
other applications function swiftly. What could cause this?

I found out someone had this same problem back in 2003 with Messenger 4.7
and it was related to a bug in DirectX 9.0. But I didn't find anyone with the
same problem with Messenger 5.1.

I'll be grateful for any help.

Thanks! I wouldn't have guessed that something suddenly takes over the whole
processing time when I simply type in Win Messenger. It turned out to be my
antivirus software Avast which takes all the resources when using Win
Messenger! MSN Messenger works fine. I'll ask if they have a solution to this
strange bug in Alwil Software.

Esa

Actually, crack open MSN Messenger, click on tools, options, etc...
Somewhere there's an option to use your anti-virus software with MSN. I'm
using the Windows Live Messenger beta so I don't really know where it is and
prior to that I mostly played around with Windows Messenger so I'm probably
not a whole lot of help. That might be the problem though and, truthfully,
you're STILL as protected as you'd always be as Avast is a real/full-time
scanner and will scan before anything is opened.
