Two Taskbars

D

Dwayne Hopkins

In Brief: I randomly have two taskbars on my system after
rebooting. I've put details of my system below, and
information I sent to HP Support. They had me disable
startup options and reboot. As soon as the second
taskbar did not show up, they would think it was fixed.
I went through the same steps twice with two seperate
reps. Each time it has come back.

Any help?

System: HP Pavillion a220n, CPU: Anthelon 2.1 GHz
(2080Mhz), Video: NVIDIA GeForce 4 MX, Sound: NVIDIA
nForce, NIC: NVIDIA nForce MCP, LAN: SyNET Net Cable (USB
networking cable connects laptop to PC).

Internet ISP is Korea Telecom ADSL through Samsung
AceLINK Modem.

OS: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 1 Build 2600

Details sent to HP Support:
I have two taskbars on my system, so I have two buttons
for each program running. Turning off all other toolbars
has no effect, nor do I get duplicates of other tool bars
such as language or quick launch. I checked my running
processes, and show only one instance of taskmgr.exe
running, which I believe is the taskbar. This problem
does not always appear, but seems to be random when I
restart my computer. I have installed the XP Power Toys,
including Task Switcher, but it does not seem to be
related to that. I installed most of my software and all
the upgrades at once, so I unfortunately can not pinpoint
a program that may have caused the problem. In addition
to the software provided with my HP Pavilion a220n, I
have installed McAfee Firewall and AntiVirus, JASC
Paintshop Pro 7 AE, Office Pro XP, AOL 9.0, software for
my Sony Clie, Zada Solutions World Clock 2001, and many
other accessory-type programs. AV and firewall are always
on, I run Ad-Aware and Spybot SD regularly. I also run
RegClean and ToniArts EasyCleaner occasionally to watch
for problems in the registry. The registry does have
entries
in "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentV
ersion\Explorer\Streams\Desktop" for "Default Taskbar"
and "Default Taskbar (Personal)". I will research this
further to see if this indicates two taskbars (for dual
monitors?). I do not use dual monitors, but believe the
vidio card is capable?

Nope, taskmgr.exe is the task-manager itself you just opened
with CTRL-ALT-DEL. Try to kill the process, you'll see...

The Taskbar is part of the explorer.exe process. Kill that
to see the effect. After you have killed it, you should run
explorer.exe again to continue windows :) Chek if you got
two explorer.exe processes (but I doubt that this is the case)

I have dual monitors. Two taskbars on dualmoni's the way you
think is not possible. Either the taskbar stretches across
the two moni, or it is only on 1 moni.

Cookie,
Thanks for the info. You are correct, I do not have
two explorer processes. I should have caught that tskmgr
was the Task Manager, pretty obvious.

Kelly,
No extra toolbar at startup, but I'll have to try a few
reboots. Thanks for the help. BTW, both "Default
Taskbar" and "Default Taskbar (Personal)" are back. Are
these the normal entries?

Very interesting, Dwayne.

The registry does have entries in:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentV
ersion\Explorer\Streams\Desktop" for "Default Taskbar"
and "Default Taskbar (Personal).

See if this script helps:
