Two PCs on different subnets.

Is it possible for two PCs to "see" each other when they are on different
subnets?

Eg. I have the following two PCs:
* WinXP 192.168.100.10 255.255.255.0
* Windows2K 192.168.1.3 255.255.255.0

If I change the subnets to 255.255.0.0, should they both "see" each other?

I am curious as to why this situation works on the internet but not on a
home network.

The 255.255.0.0 is the mask. If you set them both to 192.168.1.###, with the
subnet mask at 255.255.0.0 (somewhat rusty here, but I believe that mask
will work) they should see each other.

As far as why it works on the 'net, it's the wonder of DNS, routers,
switches, and overworked hamsters. :)

So I presume that if the IP address were as I stated, 192.168.100.10 &
192.168.1.3, then the two PCs will never see each other?
