Search on shares across different subnets / VPN impossible?

I

info

Hello all,

the following problem: There are two subnets, let subnet A be
192.168.10.0 and subnet B be 192.168.11.0, both with mask
255.255.255.0. The subnets are connected by a router or by VPN, and
there are no firewalls between them; all services are working
transparently, except one: searching files on a share in the other
subnet using the standard windows file search.

For illustration: A machine (name MB) in subnet B shares a resource
(name SB) which is then reachable as \\MB\SB from all machines in
subnet A and subnet B.

All clients in subnet A and subnet B can open files from this share,
can browse the whole directory structure and list the files in this
share, etc. But when it comes to searching, only the clients from
subnet B can search this share.

If a machine from subnet A tries to search this share, there is no
error, but the client does not get any results, even when searching for
* or for *.*

An MSCE (friend of mine) has told me that this problem is known, but I
can't believe that there is no remedy. I am quite sure that some road
warrior or branch office who get into their company's network via VPN
normally should be able to search for certain documents using their
windows clients' normal search facilities, even when using a different
subnet than the "main" one...

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thank you very much,

Peter

Thank you very much,

Assign the share a drive letter on the remote node and try again.
