Two Easy Questions Re: attachments & opening links

I used to be able to do the two functions that I have questions on without
any problems. All of a sudden I can't do the following:

First: When a link is shown in an email for instance, it is highlighted and
underlined, but for some reason when I click on it, it doesn't automatically
take me to my browser (Internet Explorer) and open up anymore. Nothing
happens - it's very frustrating!

Second: When I receive an attachment in an email (I get a lot, I work at
home), I used to just be able to save the attachment and it would go on my
desktop. Now, it goes into "Our Docs". I have to click on "Browse", locate
"Desktop" click on it, then hit "Save", to get the attachment on my desktop.
I never had to do this. I have to do this all the time. How can I get it
to default (I guess that's what you call it) so the attachments goes to my
desktop all the time? Thanks for any help I can get.

First, be sure the newsreader in Internet Explorer is set to Outlook
Express. Open Internet Explorer, go to Tools, select Internet Options, go
to the Programs tab and be sure it says Outlook Express next to Newsgroups.

From IE/OE MVP Frank Saunders:
Open Windows Explorer.
Go to Tools | Folder Options | File Types.
Scroll down to URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol and select it.
Click Edit or Advanced, depending on your Windows version.
Select 'open'.
Click Edit.

"Application used to perform this action" should read:

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\iexplore.exe" -nohome
(Check the path to iexplore.exe to make sure that is correct and use the
double quotes.)

DDE should be checked and in the boxes below it you should have:

#1:
"%1",,-1,0,,,,
#2
IExplore
#3 (blank)

#4
WWW_OpenURL

URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy should be the same.

Question 2 from Kelly Theriot MVP Win98/XP

Common issue as of 330994 and/or 331923.

Here is the workaround: You will have to apply it manually until I get a
chance to script it. Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID}\Software\Microsoft\
Outlook Express\5.0\Save Attachment Path. For the save attachment path use
as an example: F:\My Downloads\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

For each slash added is for how many times your last saving folder will
remain in tact. What is happening is that the last letter is being chopped
off when used, thus resulting in it saving to default My Documents......

Tip: This can also be done using File/Save Attachments....

For anyone wanting to test this theory, this only works if you are using the
Preview Pane (View/Layout). Without Preview Pane selected the
SaveAttachementPath will not be listed in the registry.
