Turning off sounds

I've been using XP for many years but have never come across this
problem. After recently reinstalling xp after a crash there is now
this extremely annoying squeak/swoosh type of sound that occurs on the
mouse-click that wasn't ever there before. It occurs upon opening a
folder and sometimes when clicking a web hyperlink. I like to play
music while I work and this has forced to turn down my speakers. The
big problem is that I cannot find this (supposely) wave file in my
computer. I have done "*.wav" searches in every drive st least twice.
It doesn't show up in my Windows Sound and Audio Property Devices
control box either. What suggestions do you have in me tracking this
critter down?

It's the Start Navigation click:
