Tuner Hardware missing and ehrecvr.exe CPU problem

I have an HP MediaCenter PCm7160n computer. I have Windows XP. I have a
digital converter box hooked up to it and was able to watch TV on it until
about two months ago. Suddenly it started telling me I was missing Tuner
Hardware and now I can't get a TV signal at all. I tried reinstalling the
Tuner Hardware (not easy since I am on dial-up internet) but it didn't help.
I am still getting the "Tuner Hardware missing" message when I try to watch
TV. I mention the Tuner Hardware issue because one of the forums I was in
suggested a connection between it and the ehrecvr problem. Anyway, last week
I noticed a lag in my mouse. I suspected something was interfering with the
mouse and found ehrecvr.exe was taking up 50% of my CPU. I was told by an
online Tech group (not this one) that Codec was causing the problem so I
installed (downloaded) a new Codec program (Cole2k Media - Codec Pack) on
June 24th 2009, which fixed the problem for a few days but the problem
returned today June 27th. I want to be able to watch TV on this computer so
I don't want to disable the ehrecvr.exe which is the only solution that I am
finding to this issue (I have switched it to Manual startup until I can find
a solution as I was told that would help). Oh I also found a solution that
said to disable Windows Automatic Updates but the problem already exists and
I don't see how shutting the gate after the cows get out can fix the problem.
I'm not a computer techie and don't understand techie language so please be
simplistic with your answers. I need a real solution because I want my
computer to work and I want to be able to use MediaCenter TV as I paid good
money for it and enjoyed using it until this problem began.

Maybe ehrecvr.exe going flat out on one core of your processor,
and the "Tuner Hardware missing" are aspects of the same problem.
(ehrecvr is looking for a Tuner)

You didn't mention what digital converter box this is - perhaps
Googling the digital converter box name, is going to pop
up similar issues from other users.
