Hi Jan,
Almost Bob erred when he mentioned Rnaapp. That is what dials your internet
connection. You want that one.

No too many 'a's, rnaap, I guess I wass looking for resource hogs, and assumed
the worst, The real tray tsr is problematic and serves no purpose, still the
general part of the advice holds, and at least only keying out the real player
options from real players own preferences/options panel wont kill the dial up
connection

I run Norton, and have been very pleased with it. Why AVG? What are
the benefits of that one over others?

Both NAV and AVG are very good at what they do - detecting viruses.
Having said that, AVG is a much smaller program, has a smaller memory footprint
and is less resource intensive. More importantly, it installs relatively
cleanly, unlike NAV which also installs LiveReg, LiveUpdate, creates multiple
folders full of files in different locations on your drive, and scatters itself
throughout your registry. Completely uninstalling NAV can be quite a chore. I
used NAV/SystemWorks for several years and am glad to be rid of it.
AVG works rather nicely - and it's free!

Hi Bart!

C:\Windows\System

Add a line to your [autoexec.bat] list that says:
---begin---
@Del /Y C:\Windows\System\Rnaapp.exe

---end---
be sure that there is a blank line at the bottom of the list.
when you reboot it should be gone and you can remove the line.

That's plenty of self help effort. You're moving in the right
direction.

You've read Bart's & rafter's replies? Stop deleting stuff willy-nilly
and start believing in yourself.

Jim.

My only reply to this thread was how to delete the remote network access
application, per her request, would that be willy-nilly? <g>

A question if I may. If I have already uninstalled the RealPlayer program,
and do not intend to reinstall it, would there still be a use for this file?
If so, for what type of program, connection or purpose? I ask only to
clarify and make sure all bases are covered before making any changes.

Thank you for your additional information. I do appreciate it.

Jan :)

Mr. Egan, I can assure you that I _never_ do anything willy-nilly when it
comes to my computer. I am not experienced enough, nor rich enough, to feel
that blasé about a piece of equipment that is a primary contributor to my
livelihood. My previous decision to delete the file was based upon the
recommendation of an experienced responder, in view of the fact that the
program had already been uninstalled so the file was no longer needed, and
could pose a problem.

As for believing in myself...always...as I am the only one who really knows
me, or who really cares. ;-))

Thank you for your time and additional input. I appreciate it.

Jan :)

So do I, it is my dial-up networking application.

Because it is a legitimate application (look under properties).
Start ~ Find [rnaapp] ~ right click on the exefile ~ choose
"Properties" and read who it is from (hint ~ not RealPlayer)

I wasn't plain enough it seems.

Not a RealPlayer application, as would have been noticed had you
checked the properties (RealPlayer would not have tried to pretend
it was a microsoft app).

Hi Jan,
This thread is starting to confuse me. Are you still referring to RNAAPP?
If so, yes you still want it. RNAAPP is initiated every time you begin an
internet connection, and even after you hang up, it will usually remain
running for 10-15 minutes more in anticipation of you re-establishing a
connection.

Spybot and Adaware are complementary, each finds things the other misses, the
developers have different approaches.
More important is there is not a reason NOT to run both

I run both. one has caught things the other has missed. Probably because
they are not updated to catch the same things.

Thanks for all the information. You've been very helpful.

First of all, thank you for your advice.
Yes, she does run McAfee--I considered that one an obvious one. She
also uses AOL for her ISP.
Don't know when she last defragged her disk. As for more RAM, I know
money is tight for her, so that's not an option for now.
<snip>

While I don't really agree that more memory is the solution (she's just got way
too much crap running), money being tight should not be a huge obstacle.
128MB of the older EDO RAM is $18 on PriceWatch.
