Troublesome SysConfig alters

Dell Dimension 4600 XP. For the longest time I have been starting my
computer with the SC set to Selective Startup (only Load startup items
not checked) without any problems. However, I have been getting Sys
Config Utility alerts, even though I have checked not to be alerted. I
select OK and then up comes the SCU screen, to which I select OK. And
then I get a Sys Config screen stating that "I must restart computer for
some of the changes to take effect.." Choices are Restart or Exit w/o
restarting, I choose the latter. And, in the past the computer, as far
as I could tell, worked just fine. Just today I got the dreaded blue
screen which said there had been an error and asked if to make sure that
any new hardware or software was properly installed. Sure, I've updated
java and have been continually adding MS updates to Defender, but no new
hardware.

The alert suggested that I disable or remove any new hardware or
software and disable BIOS memory options such as cashingt or shadowing
(of which I know nothing about). Then there was Tech Info:

STOP: several series of numbers and letters
Win32k.sys-address BF857363 base at BF800000, DateStamp 43446a58
Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete

Finally, see sys admin for further support.

Just turned computer off and got the blue screen with somewhat different
text saying that a problem has been detected and windows shut down to
protect computer. Also:
NO_MORE_IRP STACK_LOCATIONS.

Shut computer down and restarted. This time opened in DOS giving
choices of which mode to start in. I tried SAFE, but closed down
because I couldn't get an internet connection. Unhooked modem and
restarted computer after rehooking up modem. Got same sequence of
alerts as previously stated (but no blue screen...windows opened with
the ConfigSys alert).
