Trouble accessing My Docs on Ext HDD

While the motherboard on my PC is being replaced, I've removed the HDD and
installed it in a temp housing which I can now access from my laptop.

But, when I try to open the "my docs" folder on the ext. HDD, I'm blocked
saying that it's not accessible and that access is denied.

The PC isrunning WinXPPro (and my docs folder is password protected). The
laptop is running WinXPHome (and the my docs folder has the same name). I
know that there is a "back door" still open on the ext. HDD through the
administrator, but for the life of me I can't find a way to access the my
docs folder from the laptop.

Is this an issue between XPpro and XPhome? How do I access my "E" drive my
docs folder and provide a password? I guess I also need to say that I'm
trying to open it from Windows Explorer -- I've tried accessing files from
Word or Excel and I'm blocked there too.

I'd sure appreciate some help.

Thanks Ramesh, that worked, but Oh MY! If it's that easy, (really) and that
accessible, then why bother to password protect any files?

Hi Barbara,

The folder was not password-protected, but the "Access Denied" error was caused by NTFS permissions.

Remesh is corredt. I didn't password protect the folder (although I'm pretty
sure there is a way to do that), the external HDD was not allowing me to have
access. I have to take Remesh's word for it that it was a NTFS issue (i.e. a
HDD formatting issue?) and not a password issue.

Now you've got me wondering about password protecting folders. If you can
do it for files (in Excel, at least) you should be able to do it for folders.
I just don't know the commands.

With NTFS, you grant access to any user or group using the Permissions
button on the Sharing and Security tab Home needs to be in Safe Mode as
default admin to see that Pro needs to uncheck 'use simple file sharing' on
the view tab of explorer options Permissions, add, advanced, 'find names'
buttons

Thanks. My issues was complicated because the data I needed is on an external
HDD (using Win Pro). It's the data from my "real" PC that's in the shop
because a chip on the motherboard blew out. I needed to access the data from
my laptop, using Win XP Home, and didn't know how to do that. I frankly
didn't even know it was a permissions issue with the NTFS file formatting. I
thought it was a Win XP password issue.
