trigger not working on autoshape which is under another autoshape with text

I have three layers of autoshapes, one on top of the other.
I have a trigger on the top autoshape that results in it exiting with
a custom animation to reveal the middle layer below.
This works fine.
I have a similar trigger on the middle layer which does the same and
reveals the ottom layer.

However, if I insert text on the top autoshape (I am not using text
boxes) then an odd thing happens:

The shape (including its text) disappears normally to reveal the
middle layer. BUT the area in the middle of the middle layer is not an
active trigger and I have to click around the edge of the middle
autoshape to trigger its event. There is no text on the middle
autoshape. It's seems to be connected to the text on a completely
different layer. If I remove the text from the top layer the tigger
on the middle layer shape works fine.

I just can't get my head round this at all.
Any ideas?

Bob,
This appears to be a bug with PowerPoint. I was able to reproduce it too.
I'll post if I can come up with a suggestion to workaround it.
