Transparent shadows under desktop items.

Hello. Transparent shadows under desktop items have been lost. They
look ugly. My friends tell me that they never come back and I have to
re-install XP?? Formatting for a few shadows did not sound right. They
seem to come back (look fine) for a few seconds during restart and
dissappear again.

Help please.

It sounds to me like you have disabled ClearType font rendering. To
re-enable it go into your control panel, select Appearance and Themes,
Display, Appearance, Effects. Make sure the checkbox is ticked and select ClearType for the "Use the
following method to smooth edges of screen fonts:" option. Hit Ok and then
Ok on Display Properties and all should be well. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help however it did not help. Even after a re-start. Is
there a way to do a system restore without loosing my last downloads
and program installations?

Set your background picture to NONE.

I believe that if you use a JPEG (or possibly a GIF) for a background you
lose the transparency.

Hello. Thanks for all the suggestions however, no progress so far. I
use a jpeg, same picture (Bugatti Veyron speedometer) for the past few
months and the trouble began a week or so ago. I did set the
background picture to NONE, the smooth edged transparent shadows
seemed to have been restored but when I switched back, same thing
again.

No surrender no retreat!

Your friends are misinformed. To have transparent icons, do all of the
following:

1) Hold down the Windows key and press Pause/Break. On the "Advanced"
tab, under "Performance" click "Settings." On the "Visual Effects"
tab, make sure the box "Use drop shadows for icon labels" is checked.

2) Right-click on the Desktop, and make sure that "Arrange Icons by"
"Lock Web items" is not checked.

3) Right-click on the Desktop, and choose Properties. On the "Desktop"
tab, click "Customize Desktop," then on the "Web" tab, uncheck all
boxes.

4) Make sure any Wallpaper is an image file. Html will stop the
transparency.

FINALLY SUCCESS!!
Ken, thank you very much. Useful info on using only image files as
wallpapers.
