Transferring Files and Settings from old computer

Please help! Have tried ''connecting crossover patch cable
for PC to PC connection" plugged into to the RJ45 Etherial
ports, but nothing happens. I used my Windows XP CD as a
tool. The instructions in The Files and Settings Transfer
Wizard says to use a "Serial Cable" (LapLink serial cable
or a serial file transfer cable), but Circuit City and
Office Depot both said they don't carry it, and suggested
the CAT5e Crossover Patch Cable. I don't want to set-up a
network, but tried the network cable too, to no avail.
What else can I try? Thank you.

If you enable file sharing you could save your FAST file on your old
computer and access it from your new computer. That's the only way I
know to use Ethernet for file and settings transfer.
