This case has been solved, as you might have seen in the XY forum: it's not
an XY issue.

Now I'd like to know more about your error "91". Please download the latest
version before you try to reproduce it. Your version 4.20.0025 is quite old.

Don: The error "91" message only occurred when attempting to use "Open with"
and the Netscape browser. My default browser is IE6.

I've looked at the forum discussion of this but am somewhat confused. What
is "x-setup" which is stated as causing the problem. I do not have this
program, but I do have "Copy to" and "Move to" in the right-click context
menu.

I'll install XY and go on from there in the forum if necessary. However,
could you tell me how to remove the "Copy to" and "Move to" items from the
right-click menu?

Thanks again for your help.

Further to above, I've now found a program for removing items in the
right-click menu:
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/contextmenueditor.html
I haven't tried it yet, but it looks as if it might do the job.

<quote> Context Menu Editor allows you to remove non-standard items from the
right-click menu of files, folders and Internet Explorer. The program can
come handy if previous software installation failed to remove a context menu
item, or if you wish to (permanently) remove an item that you don't need.

RE: Previous problem. Donald, what we need is an "open" command from
the file menu that will open any selected files in the appropriate
program. Explorer does this with no problem. The "move to/copy to"
problem happens in Explorer /only/ when the open command is called
from the context menu. So an "open" command from the file menu in XY
would solve the problem.

PS. I'm keeping my "move to" and "copy to" context entries, their
used too often to discard :)

For some inexplicable reason I have both "move to" and "copy to" twice on my
context menu. I'll try to remove them one at a time. I would prefer that
*all* highlighted files are opened with a simple "enter" keystroke, as in
Windows Explorer.

Just to help you distinguish what's what: XY has "Move To", "Copy To", and
"Backup To". Always those three. And they all have submenus.

Hi Donald,

When looking at XY I remembered that you had told me how to make
the thumbnails function work. I also remembered that I must have done
something wrong because it wouldn't work for me. It showed the pic in
the preview tab but not in the "thumbs" file list above. Could you
give me a "step by step" please ?

The original graphic info is ;

Type: JPEG file
Size: 3008 x 2000
Colours: 16M RGB (24-bit)
Area: 6,016,000 pixels (12,032,000 bytes video mem)
File size: 319,836 bytes, loaded in 2218 ms
Compression ratio: 1.77%

Bye the way, that info came from Tracker. VERY nice indeed. Very well
done. :)

Regards, John.

John, when you say it did not show in the "thumbs" file list, you have not
said what happened instead. So I can only guess. Try this: open
Configuration/Thumbnails and check the "max area...", maybe you have just to
increase the value.

You changed that from "Colors", didn't you ;)

Hi Donald,

Always a pleasure to see you contributing here. :)
John, when you say it did not show in the "thumbs" file list, you have not

Sorry, the "thumb" column just shows a black rectangle. Under "name"
the name is listed but there is a grey rectangle behind it.

Bye the way, I am doing this check in 4.20 0014 so it may be outdated
in this regard. Could we have a "stop creating thumbs" button on the
toolbar please ? Maybe a toggle ? "Stop/start creating thumbs".
Try this: open
Configuration/Thumbnails and check the "max area...", maybe you have just to
increase the value.

Fine, but how do I calculate how much to increase it ? Adding three 0s
did nothing. :-(

Actually, now that I have done that I no longer get a picture in the
preview pane. I cannot restore the "Thumbs" tab settings because there
is no "restore defaults" button. :-(

As if that isn't enough I notice now that the "thumb" has "Too large"
written in it. No idea what setting needs changing.

There is a size setting on the "Thumb" tab and the "Preview" tab so
that adds to my confusion. I went to click on the "help" button on
both of those tabs for a fuller explanation but.....there wasn't a
"help" button !

I did look at the help file but it still wasn't clear how the settings
operated on both of those tabs and what the "default" settings
were.

Playing around some more I wasn't clear about caching either. A
"cashing thumbs FAILED.." notice didn't help.
You changed that from "Colors", didn't you ;)

Maybe, I do sometimes correct incorrect spelling. :) I cannot see
that info now though. I have managed to break your program. :-(

Regards, John.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. That helps a lot. I tried to use ContextMenuEditor to
remove the unwanted context menu items, but it would not touch what are
presumably system entries. I guess I'll have to try a registry edit, but I'm
not sure where to look. Perhaps I'll be feeling more adventurous tomorrow!!!
Thanks again.

Hi John,
Always a pleasure to see you contributing here. :)
Same here, your story was really hilarious :D

Two things first: please try the latest version; send me one of those
problem pics which lead to black thumbnails (maybe the pics are just dirty,
haha).

Area in square pixels = width * height. The default is 12,000,000 (= 3,000 *
4,000).

"Stop creating thumbs": press Esc. This will generally stop any ongoing
process in XY.

wanting this, it is on the forum page at:

One final request (at least until I can think of another one). Could you
post details of updates on the newsgroup? We must try to keep up with you,
however difficult it might be.

I rather would not post (almost daily) BETA updates here because, well, they
are BETA. That would be looking for too much trouble. The official releases
(about every 2 months) are caught anyway by somebody.

which lead to black thumbnails (maybe the pics are just dirty,

As you can see from the above, the thumbnail is different than the
"preview" photo now.
Area in square pixels = width * height. The default is 12,000,000 (= 3,000 *
4,000).

Okay, but when I add a 0 to that today it still doesn't work properly.
See : http://members.optushome.com.au/jfnews/xyshot2.jpg
The thumbs are now just black rectangles.
"Stop creating thumbs": press Esc. This will generally stop any ongoing
process in XY.

Okay, but a "stop" button would save one checking with you and/or the
help file. It would be easier to use, after all there is plenty of
toolbar space.

Regards, John.
