Trackball Optical on Windows XP

I am trying to replace my Logitech optical wheel mouse,
that came with my Compaq Presario Desktop last year, with
a Microsoft Trackball optical. I had the MS trackball in
use on my laptop (running Windows 2000), but have recently
installed a Microsoft wireless wheel mouse. I tried to
install the trackball on my desktop PC using the supplied
CD (Intellipoint 4.0) and found that the mouse did not
work. I searched the Knowledge Base and found that
Intellipoint 5.0 was needed to work with XP. I installed
5.0 and still the mouse did not work. The mouse
properties identified it as the correct device, but the
dumb thing just sits there like a dead mouse! I tried
disabling the Logitech, but still nothing.

Any ideas? Do I have to uninstall the Logitech device and
then install the Intellipoint 5.0 software?

Thanks for the help.

Version 4 is definitely compatible with XP (I have it!). You may still find
version 4.12 on Microsoft's download site.

Also, since you are changing mice, you should remove the Logitech device,
drivers and software first. MouseWare and Intellipoint do not work well
when installed on the system (personal experience also.)
