Brand new computer-out of the box on Friday. Am not able to send/receive in
outlook express. All my folders were downloaded, all my newsgroups applied,
etc. Tech support at msn, tech support at HP (manufacturer) are all stumped
and have given me the run-a-round. Norton Security had to be reinstalled 3
times before I was able to get other programs to work but nothing has
remedied this problem with oe. I've got the account information set up right
so what could I possibly do to enable the program to send/receive emails?
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE....if there's someone out there that can guide me, I'm
hoping to get some direction as everyone who was supposed to know how to help
has done nothing but add to my aggravation.

If I had your computer in my shop the first thing I would do is to
ditch Norton completely and permanently. There are alternatives that
are at least equally effective, much less problematic, and far less
likely to corrupt other things on your computer.

What exactly happens when you open Outlook Express and click on
Send/Receive? Please provide the complete verbatim text of any and
all error messages.

Good luck

Hi,

Just trying to help:

(1) Will you be able to connect to Internet accessing some web sites? If
yes, let's try next and if not, consult ISP for Internet connection problems
first.
(2) Will you be able to send/receive mails using web browser (IE or MSN
explorer) for your MSN email account? This is just to ensure that account
information are correct.
(3) "Norton Security had to be reinstalled 3 times...": This may have two
potential effects since Norton Internet Security is complicated (doesn't
mean it's not good) and sometime can be troublesome.
(a) Did you run all updates for NIS? After you installed it, please run all
updates for NIS before doing anything else. (PS: Please also run Windows
updates as well)
(b) If you're using NIS 2006, disable AntiSpam "Client Integration" with
Outlook and Outlook Express. PS: You may need to consult their technical
support or user's manual for how to do this.
(c) Manually add OE to Program Control so NIS will not block out its
traffic. PS: Again, you may need to consult their technical support or
user's manual for how to do this.
(d) Adding your network card address by running wizard in Home Network Zone.
PS: Again, you may need to consult their technical support or user's manual
for how to do this.

I will suggest after (1) & (2), disable NIS first and see if OE can
send/receive emails. If yes, that means it's the problem of NIS, and in
this case, I'd advise you to contact Symantec's technical support first
about how to "completely remove and re-install Norton Security" and follow
the general guidelines in (3). If disable NIS does make any differences, I
am kind of run out of ideas as well.

Hope this helps.

Hi sandra,

As Ron M. has said, ditch Norton. My Mom got a new HP laptop with it
installed, and that was the first thing I did for her. There are many free
alternatives, and I'm willing to bet yours is only a "test copy", meaning it
expires within a certain time, and you'll be pressured to *buy* their
application. While some in this NG like Norton products, I don't. They are
notorious for their "bloat", and they just plain screw up a good OS.

As Ron mentioned, please post the exact error message, as that can be of
great help.

Hi Ron and thank you for replying. I have just spent 2 hours on the phone
with HP support. They had me change the URL server to what you see but what
was there by default, didn't work either. I disable Norton for a few minutes
to see if it would fix things but didn't help. On Friday when I first turn
the computer on for the first time, I was having problems with ie until I
disabled Nortons firewall. As a matter of fact, I had to uninstall Norton 2
times before it findally started working at all.... Any suggestions for me
that I haven't already tried which I thing, is everything?

Ron, I forgot to ask you: what other anti virus would you suggest? What
about AVG? Avast?

You might want to take a look at this knowledgebase article..

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q259133/

I use AVG and have for quite some time and while no single antivirus tool
will catch everything, I havent had any virus on my office computers. I also
use Microsofts Windows Defender.

Both are free from their respective vendors (google "free avg" for AVG and
just go to the Microsoft homepage and look for downloads to find windows
defender.

Good luck, Stephan

Hi Sandra,
If you receive this message:"No transport provider was available for
delivery by this recipient try read this article:

Olex: "Error Finding POP3 or SMTP server when you send or Receive mgs"

For more Error code read this KB:
http://support.microsoft.com/KB/813514

Your main focus should be on Norton and your ISP, try to understand how to
make Norton Internet protection work for you and what settings will allow you
do what you want and in the main time still save and secure by reading the
Help file with NIS Software.
Try disable Scan email in the Firewall and assign the Outlook express as
trusted/Allowed access (Port 21, 587..) or what ever port assigned in the
firewall to be allowed.
You may have a corrupt/damaged folder or damaged user Password that
producing this issue, also the Max Amount Unit (MAU) of Received and sent
Mail with ISP which set by them or set by default on your Modem connection.
If no joy or something you can't get grasp of in the above write back with
the exact Error message.

Sandra, just like MSN and HP we are starting at the beginning, however we
are not limited to promoting any company's bundled products so the first
thing I am going to suggest is that you uninstall Norton completely and see
what happens without it.

Go through the outlook express options and set the one to read all messages
in plain text, that virtually eliminates active content and thus the common
email viruses. At this time do not visit unknown websites.

Go tools>accounts>mail and look on the servers tab. Norton may have changed
them to localhost or 127.0.0.1 and you must reset them to whatever your MSN
tech told you... usually of the form mail.xxx.net or whatever. You must
revert to simple basic settings else nobody knows what is interacting with
what. You are obviously too sensible to open emails with executable
attachments etc so you are in no great danger from viruses, in any case you
are facing the possibility of reinstalling Windows because of these problems
so there's not a lot to lose.

Now, does it work at all? What works and what does not? The aggravation is
well understood but try not to get frustrated with it, if we can get up and
running without the ancillary crap we can pin down the cause of the
problems. I appreciate that this may look like an anti-Norton conspiracy but
it's not, I've seen it trash registries and also report faults that are not
there in order to claim it fixed them... it truly is a crock and exists only
to feed off paranoia :)

Also, it is vaguely possible that a fault may exist with your ISP. MSN will
always assume the problem is not at their end but it is not impossible. Once
again if you can establish what works and what does not we may find
workarounds to locate the problem. Please also mention what kind of
connection you have (Dial up/DSL etc) and whether you have a router to
connect more than one PC. Even if you only have the one PC a router is still
a good idea because it helps to protect you.

I woke up to all these replies, all this advice! Thank you all so very much.
I'm going to copy go through all alternatives very carefully and see what
happens. Briefly, I'll give some more information to define what's going on
with oe in case someone can recognize more difinitively what's happening.
This is the error message(s) I receive:

Unable to poll for new messages on your HTTP server. Account:

I will be working on all advice given and see what happens. HAPPY JULY 4TH.

ONE MORE QUESTION FOR NOW: When downloading a new anti viral program,
should I first save it before installing? Then uninstall NAV and only then,
install new download? I'm afraid of being without any protection while
switching from one to the other.....

ONE MORE THING I FORGOT TO MENTION: When I was on the phone last night with
HP, they told me to disable all Norton which I did and oe still didn't work.
When I first started using this computer on Friday, I had to disable
Norton's firewall in order to use ie without the problems it was causing and
switched to windows firewall. That took care of those problems in ie.

I'll be calling my ISP (msn) today and if I have the patiences to wait while
they keep transferring me here, there, everywhere and keeping me on hold
forever, I'll try to get connected to oe professional........big laugh but
I'm going to try......

Why the Port number is 0 not (25, 587), you may have your SMTP set wrong or
you have no connection!, are you able to go to the Internet? and your
Modem/Router is working fine.
Open your OE and From TOOLS >> Accounts when it is open select your
account and click on Properties and there click on servers Tab:
Incoming Mail (POP3): [ pop.mail.msn.com ]

Outgoing mail (SMTP): [ smtp.mail.msn.com ]
You could put your info there like name and password and tick remember
Password and the Option My Server required Authentication (if it does so).

On Connection Tab:
see if your default connection set there or no.

On Advanced Tab;
Outgoing mail (SMTP): [25] by default some server use [587]

Incoming mail (POP3): [110] by default it could be changed but according to
your mail account settings.

Server timeouts:
Move the selectior to whatever time suite you and think right.

That a guess but you could have winsock problem try to open the RUN command
and type: CMD click Ok and in the prompt command type C:\>netsh winsock reset
Press Enter on your Keyboard then type exit and reboot your machine.

About downloading another AV while having NIS it's good since you need to be
potected, then after downloading on CD/DVD your disired AV uninstall the NIS
and install the new AV and read the help file and set it to work for you in
better way.

I'm now using Outlook email and everything is working fine in that but I

everything working right after the money I spent on this computer, right?!!!
I can't get over the way you buy a new computer and everybody (especially,

Okay, by all means download the new AV and save to disk, also save any free
user key you may get in a notepad file (copy and paste?) so that you can
reinstall later if you ever need to without going through the registration
page again :) I'm thinking of AVG here but may apply to most of them. I
generally always save to disk first into a folder I call Archives with a
subfolder for the product, then if I have to rebuild anything it's mostly
already on the machine.

Norton will often uninstall but fail to put the proper settings back as it
found them, I strongly suggest you uninstall it BEFORE calling tech support
and then check your Outlook Express server settings against those which are
working for Outlook. As advised question the "Port" settings because that
should no way be port zero.

If you opt for AVG I strongly suggest you do NOT install the email scanning
part because ALL Antivirus email scanning is prone to breaking Outlook
Express. It adds no real protection to the system but is well known and
documented as causing mayhem.

Email scanning works by installing a dummy server on your own machine so
Outlook Express is diverted to there instead of your ISP's mail server. The
dummy or "Proxy" server then forwards OE's requests to the mail server and
scans the replies looking for viral signatures. If this scanning take
unusually long, OE loses patience and files get corrupted. It's kinda like
you calling me and me calling your voice mail so that I can filter out any
swear words :)

You are in no great danger of getting a virus without any AV system running
for a short time provided you only visit known good websites and are
sensible with email and I strongly suggest you uninstall Norton before
attempting AVG, if you fell any happier disconnecting from the internet by
all means do so, but after reconnecting you should get AVG updates and then
see where you are.

Once again I sympathize with the hoops you are having to jump through but if
Outlook is working then it should not be a system problem, more likely a
setting problem.

I've been using AVG Free for quite some time and am pleased with it. I
would suggest at install time do a Custom install and don't install the
email scanner, you don't need it and it can be intrusive and difficult
to disable once installed. Other than that I've found it to be a good
product.

I have not tried Avast but have read it is a very good product, too.

Hi Sandra,
Yes and NO, why?, settings are diffrenet from country to another and from
account provider to another, it depend on where you are.

My approach will be as follow, write down every settings (all) which work
now and on notepad and then make any suggested changes.
With respect for all trying to help but you will end up reading a lot and
your thread will be full and not excuted in the right direction.
Try to read which provided and proceed.

I use AVG myself and recommend it to others very frequently. Avast is
also pretty good, but I don't like their user interface (personal
preference).

AVG's free edition can be a bit difficult to find from their regular
web site as they would prefer to sell you their "paid for" version. To
get the free version go to http://free.grisoft.com

Norton often requires a supplementary uninstaller to actually get rid
of it all. Get SYMNRT from

Is this a free hotmail account that you are trying to access? That
could be part of the problem, as Microsoft has changed the rules
regarding access to free Hotmail accounts from Outlook Express.

I don't use Hotmail myself so I don't have a lot of expertise in
dealing with it. I find Gmail to be a superior product in many ways.
