Tool Bars accompany every file in Word

I got a new computer with Office 2003 installed. Unlike all other versions of
Word I've worked with, every file I put on the screen now has its own full
Word tool bar display. I want only one set of tool bars at the top of the
screen that will apply to the file on which I'm working. This takes up way
too much screen space!

How do I turn off the tool bars that appear at the top of every file after
the first one?

Thanks

Go to Tools > Options, on the View tab, and uncheck "Windows in
Taskbar". That changes from one entire window per document
(technically, "single document interface" or SDI) to one window that
hosts all open documents ("multiple document interface" or MDI).

After you've done that, you can switch among documents with Ctrl+F6 or
the Window menu, or you can click the smaller of the two Restore
buttons in the upper right and have the documents "floating" in the
workspace, or use Window > Arrange All to tile them.
