tool bar with forward, red X for delete etc. isn't there

The tool bar above the inbox that shows forward, red X for delte, etc. is no
longer there. How do I get that back?

View | Layout and check the toolbar option.

Right click where the toolbar used to be>select toolbar.

Sounds like you are using WLM & not WM?

To see the menu bar File, edit, view etc, press left Alt & M on the
keyboard, and select 'show menu bar'
