Too much memory usage with recent catalyst drivers for Ati Radeon 9600 Mobility

Hello,

My laptop (Packard Bell Easynote R7723 with ATI Radeon 9600 mobility)
came with version 8.0 of catalyst drivers.
Commit memory charge after Windows XP (SP2) boot was 130 Mo.

I installed the latest catalyst drivers.
Commit memory charge after Windows XP boot jumped to 180 Mo !!!!

I reinstalled the original drivers :
Commit memory charge after Windows XP is 130 Mo.


So my questions are :

1°) Is this by design that catalyst drivers use so much memory ?
2°) Is there a way to install only the drivers, ie no ATI Control
Center and things like this...

When you get drivers on the ATI site, ignore the broadband downloads (full
package) and look at the dialup downloads. You can get install packages of
just the latest drivers and WDM drivers (if you need them). Look at the
previous drivers section as well: Catalyst 5.11 was the last version to
offer the old Control Panel. You can install the (old) Control Panel and
then the newest Display drivers. There is also a program (not from ATI)
called "ATI Tray Tools" that can be used instead of the Control Panel. It is
supposed to have all the functionality of the CCC, in a small fraction of
the memory.
