Too many items under BIOS/IRQ9 to install USB 2.0

I had to purchase an Adapter USB2 Connect CardBus adapter for my Compaq
Presario 2700T notebook. I did this because the HP DVD Burner I bought
requires USB 2.0.
The USB 2.0 wasn't working and after talking to a tech support at Adaptec, I
found out that by going to Start>Run>msinfo32, I have too many items under
IRQ9 which is listed under BIOS Version/Date (which is, btw: Phoenix
Technologies LTD 4.06,8/14/2002).
The tech support suggested I go to the compaq/hp site and look for upgrades
to my bios. I couldn't find any there.

Am I just totally screwed and will have to wait until I can afford a new
computer or does anyone out there have more familiararity with BIOS than I
do? Which is nothing since I never heard of them until talking to the Adaptec
tech rep.

Also, is there just one IRQ? I am sorry but I am not familiar with that
either.

Thank you!

They're trying to get the laptop have a bios compliant so XP can reroute
irqs in its fashion. This is not always possible.

There are 16 hardware irqs before XP rerouting. Most hardware has its
designated bios assigned irq by default. Some laptops, like PCs can free up
a hardware irq. This is done by disabling hardware not used in the bios
setup. And this will only work if the hardware needing its own irq will
work with the irq freed up in the bios setup. Fiddling around like this can
present potential problems if the bios is set to default again. And,
sometimes, the bios is able to properly assign hardware irqs where you won't
have that problem if bios setup is cleared in the cmos, reset and bios setup
set to default again.

Thanks so much for your response, Johny.

So are you saying that I should probably just leave things alone in case I
mess something up further?

Also, does it make sense what the Adaptec tech told me? That if there are
too many items under an IRQ, that a new hardware/software(?) might not be
recognized?

I don't know if this info helps or not but I found more under my System
Information:

Yep, that's the hardware irq usage you see there. Not, the XP software
rerouting of irqs which has much more in number. XP can't do this if the
bios is not compliant.

I don't see anything using irqs 3, or 10, or 11. Why, I don't know as most
LAN network hardware and 1394 adapters can use irq 3. Video chips/cards can
take 10 or 11. There' no need to stuff all these in one sock as Adaptec
personnel pointed out.
