Too many headings appearing in TOC

Hi, I'm working on a document that was sent without a generated TOC or Style.
I applied the style headings to the first four levels but want the TOC to
show only levels 1 and 2. When I try to generate the TOC after setting it up
to show only those two levels, I get the following: The title from the title
page as the first entry (which I don't want), levels 1, 2 and 3 for the first
four sections of the document plus some text, and nothing for the 5th (and
final) section of the document. I've tried everything suggested under
Microsoft Help, but nothing seems to work. All I want to show up in the TOC
are levels 1 and 2.

Any help would be appreciated.

In the Insert | Reference | Index and Tables | Table of Contents dialog, set
the number of levels to 2. Then click Options and remove the 1 from the
Title style. Also delete the numbers from any other Level 1 and Level 2
styles that you don't want to appear in the TOC. Then make sure you really
have applied heading styles consistently throughout the document.

Thank you, Suzanne,

I'm not at the office now and can't access the document, but I will try your
suggestion first thing Monday morning.

Thanks again.

Suzanne,

It worked! I followed your suggestions. The problem was that the heading
styles were not applied consistently throughout the manual; the client had
appllied headings here and there, including in regular text, and then not in
other places where they belonged. It took some time to straighten out, but
all is well now. Thanks again.

And it may have been Word rather than the client responsible for the random
headings. If you leave "Define styles based on your formatting" enabled,
you're liable to find that Word has made a heading out of any short line
that doesn't end in a period, especially if you boldface it.
