Too many fragments remain after defrag and defrag takes too long

The folders are between 68 and 75 MB in size.

I have the indexing feature enabled. Frequently we don't remember a
document name and search by contents. I'm not interested to lose that
capability.

EFS means?

At majorgeeks.com, they seem to be especially fond of a defrag program by
Auslogics. I tried that and it seems to have eliminated quite a bit of the
fragments. Not all but certainly more than the built-in did. And, far
more quickly. Under half an hour for the C drive.

I then re-tried the built-in defrag and it is still choking and sputtering
along at 2-3 hours per try.

Thanks, Mike. That was helpful. The Event viewer was loaded!

According to the built-in defrag program, the majority of the fragmented
files are in the SVI folder.

How large is the default setting for each of the three files? Mine is set to 512 kb but this
can be set much lower.

At the size mine is set at I cannot imagine that fragmentation becomes a problem.

To adjust the event file size right click on System (or Application / Security) in Event
Viewer and select Properties. These reports do not need to go back more than
10 / 14 days.

Defrag does produce a list of fragmented files, check to see where they are.

spme common ones are EVENTS
under Control Paner | Admin tools | Event Viewer.
review the entries to see if you have any BIG problems, and when satisfied, CLEAR the events.

How many files do you have in the SVI folder? You do not need any
older than 10 / 14 days! I regularly only have one restore point. You only
need to keep them for any period of time if your system is unstable.

is generated during the encryption and decryption process.

If you find defrag by Anslogics adequate then use it, but don't use both.

Perfect Disk is another option. It allows you to exclude files and folders from
the defrag process.

I'm set up for the 512 MB (Event View Properties) and I have about 5 days
worth of RP subfiles in the Restore folder.

I also ran a "junk file" eliminator program and that really cleaned up a lot
of the fragments.

Since beginning this whole exercise, the clean ups have recovered about 1 GB
of free space. So, I'd say it's been worth it.
