Cannot Defrag C or D (D is HP_Recovery) Have tried many things...X

My computer has slowed down. I have not been able to defragment either of my
drives. I run AVG Virus Scan Daily and use that firewall. Also, ran the Trend
Micro HouseCall and neither picks up anything. I am running XP Service Pack 2

When I attempt to defrag the C drive, the error message that I get is:

<i>Disk defragmenter has detected that chkdsk is schedule to run on this
volume (c) Please run chkdsk /f </1>

I do not have anything scheduled to run and even if I reboot after going
run/chkdsk /f I get:

<i>The type of the file system is NTFS. Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you
like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts?
</i>

I pick Y at the prompt but that has been unsuccessful even in Safe Mode
(which I have had problems getting into also)

For the D (HP_Recovery) I get this error:

<i>Volume HP_RECOVERY (D:) has only 6% free space available for use by Disk
Defragmenter. To run effectively Disk Defragment requires at least 15% usable
free space. There is not enough disk space to properly complete the
operation. Delete some unneeded files on your hard disk, and then try
again.,<i>

I have cleared out all the temp files, recycle bin, etc. I cannot access any
files in D: as the recovery area is locked.

I have admin capabilities in my user name but can only access the additional
administrator option when I boot up in safe mode.

When I analyze the fragments in D I get a list of most fragmented files:

I386\BOOT.IMG (182 MB) \PRELOAD\BASE.01.INP through \PRELOAD\BASE.18.INP
(620 MB each except for 18 which is 162) and \PRELOADBASE1.INP (397 MB)
average of 2 fragments per listing.

D drive analysis shows 48% total fragmentation and 97% file fragmentation.

I've also tried chkdsk /f and chkdsk /x

I am not very sophisticated on this matter and don't know where to go from
here to address this issue. If anyone can help direct me I'd appreciate it.
I’ve spent hours on this and my pal with more computer savvy has spent 2
without luck.

You can try Norton Utilities (aka: NU) (versions released in 2003 or
later) to Defrag the drives. The software is available as is or
bundled with
Norton SystemWorks 2003

NU has DOS mode Scan Disk to fix locked-up C drive (called NDD.Exe),
but you need a boot floppy disk to fire-up the computer, because XP
does not have provision to boot from C drive. Alternatively, you can
use Scandisk.exe of Windows 98 / SE to fix the C. Both files will Scan
and fix C or for that matter any other drive.

However, the Defrag can only be carried in Windows Mode and prior
to running that, the Scan Disk must be run and fix the dive. If you
have
fixed the drive (i.e.: Scan Disk) in DOS Mode, then Defrag of Windows
XP
should run or if not the Norton's version (called Speed Disk) will
definately run.

For the D~ drive, since you have very little free space, you can MOVE
some folders to C~ drive, Defrag the D~ drive and Move Them back
and then Defrag the C~ drive
