too many columns in start

M

Marcy

Hi, I guess I have too many programs. Just now I have 3 columns when I click
on start>all programs. I cant even find some of the programs that I have
perhaps because there is no more space on the screen. How can I delete items
from there to make room for the ones that I want quicker access to. I
remember reading once that I can rename the longest worded program and it
makes the columns 'skinnier" but I want a adifferent solution if possible

Why not reorganize your Start Menu?

On your Start Menu, right click "All Programs" and select
"Explore All Users" from the menu that pops out.
In the right hand pane, right click in an open space and
select New -> Folder. Name this folder something that describes
similar programs that are installed on your computer. Things
like Security, Utilities, Financial, etc. Whatever works for
you. Now drag and drop the program icons into the new folders.
You can also drag existing program folders into these new
folders.

Once you've got everything sorted out, go back and hit Start ->
All Programs. Right click on the menu that pops out and select
"Sort by name" in order to put them in alphabetical order.

Keep in mind that your Start Menu is really the combination of
two folders on your system:

C:\Documents and Settings\(YOURUSERNAME)\Start Menu
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu

You can organize it just like any other folder.

Good luck

1. Delete some links for programs that have icons in Quick Launch, Tray,
Start Menu
2. Make IE and OE desktop icons, or leave the desktop empty and move IE, OE
Whatever else in Quick Launch toolbar.
3. Drag links to programs you use often in Start Menu
4. Create a desktop folder and move some of the links that you don't use
often from Programs in the new folder
5. In programs, delete links for programs that start automatically anyway -
ex. Adobe Reader, Microsoft Media Player; help, uninstall, web links are
rarely used also.
6. Shorter program links names reduce the clutter - ex "Microsoft Excel" to
"MS Excell" or just "Excel"
There are many other ways to get an organized desktop - multiple toolbars,
floating toolbars, Favorites, multiple desktops.

This one comes up a lot as new users add programs.
There is also a "scroll" option for programs
right click the task bar for PROPERTIES
go to the START menu tab
customize
advanced
scroll programs
this will put all of your programs in one column to scroll
I think it solves the problem the easy way if you don't mind scrolling the
list of programs.
