To Microsoft -- please fix the function to add a song to Outlook e

H

Hi,

I tried to use a feature that Outlook Express has, to get music to begin to
play when someone opens an Outlook email that is sent by me, but I can not
get this feature to work.

I have tried to research this problem online, and have read dozens of
comments from others that experienced the same thing.

My hope for getting this feature to work lies in my desire to send emails
with soothing, comforting music to someone who is very ill, so your help in
addressing this would be oh so very appreciated!

This is what I did, in following the instructions:

Opened Outlook Express. Clicked on Create Mail. Typed an email message.
Clicked on Format. Clicked on Background. Clicked on Sound. The Background
Sound window appeared. In the Background Sound window, clicked on Browse.
Navigated to the folder that contains the sound/music file I wanted to add to
the email. Then double clicked on the sound/music file I wanted to add to the
email. Then clicked on OK. Then clicked send email.

As soon as I clicked on "send", I got this message: "One or more of the
pictures in this message could not be found. When you send this message these
pictures will not be included. Are you sure you want to send this message?"
(Note - there's no pictures in the email, just text and the option of sending
the background music.)

The only way to send the message is to press "ok".

The recipient (not an Outlook user) doesn't hear any music playing when they
open the email.

I tried "attaching" the song as an attachment, but that doesn't help, either.

Might you know how to get this to work? (Even as far as not
getting the message of "One or more of the pictures in this message could not
be found. When you send this message these pictures will not be included. Are
you sure you want to send this message?")

Is there a fix that could be attended to?

If there is a fix, is it something that needs (or will be needed) to be
downloaded manually, or will it be part of an automatic update to the
operating system? (Thus, I'm asking how to find out about the fix.) [If
it's at all possible, you can email to my account associated with my posting,
if it's accessible to you. If not, I can post one, if necessary. It would
be wonderful if you could post the update about a fix to this thread, too!!]

I just can't tell you what your looking into this means to me!

Thank you oh so much! I just appreciate it so!

With so much gratitude,

-- Karen

This newsgroup is for support of Outlook 97, 98, 2000, 2002, 2003 & 2007
from the Office family for Intel PCs. For Outlook Express (OE) & Windows
Live Mail support try posting in one of these newsgroups:
microsoft.public.inetexplorer.ie4.outlookexpress for OE 4.x
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie5.outlookexpress for OE 5.x
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie55.outlookexpress for OE 5.5x
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress for OE 6.x
microsoft.public.internet.mail.mac for the Macintosh version of OE
microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop for Windows Live Mail

If those groups aren't carried on the news server that's carrying this group
try using msnews.microsoft.com (MS's public news server that's the source
for all the microsoft.public newsgroups).

1. This is the wrong group - you need the outlook express stationery newsgroup.

2. the error referred to the picture, not the sound

3. not all mail clients will play sound. Outlook (the one with calendar, contacts etc) will not. it's also possible the recipient's antivirus removed it as a security issue.

4. even if it is a bug in OE, it will not be fixed. OE is old and no longer supported - its being replaced by Windows Live Mail.

Hi Diane,

Thank you for the response.
2. the error referred to the picture, not the sound

What would it mean that the email is only 10kb, and thus doesn't have any
music embedded in it?
3. not all mail clients will play sound. Outlook (the one with calendar, contacts etc) will not.

Are you referring to Outlook Express? If so, the instructions I gave on how
to add sound are for that program. That's why I am trying to figure out how
to make the function work. (I think I am unclear what "Outlook" is, vs
"Outlook Express" which I am using. Are you meaning that Outlook Express
doesn't have the ability to play sound?, (as it gives the instructions on how
to do it).
4. OE is old and no longer supported - its being replaced by Windows Live Mail.

Thank you for telling me! Could you tell me, too, what exactly Windows Live
Mail is? Is it hotmail? Does Windows Live Mail have the function of adding
a song that will play upon the recipient opening the email?

Thank you again so much for your response. It really helped!

Hi Diane,

Thank you for the response.

What would it mean that the email is only 10kb, and thus doesn't have any
music embedded in it?

This means the music wasn't included in the message as an attachment or an antivirus scanner removed it.

you can add sound - the recipients mail program may not play it. This newsgroup is for Outlook so we target the answers for outlook.

Outlook Express is a free mail and news application included with windows.
Outlook is a mail, calendar and contact application included with Microsoft Office and often used by corporations.

More info on the differences is at http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/olexpr.asp

Windows live mail is very similar to Outlook Express and supports pop3, imap and hotmail accounts. They changed the name in an attempt to eliminate the confusion between outlook and outlook express.
