To know icon resource bound to file extension

Hello.

I am not a native English speaker so please be patient
for my poor English.

I think some icons are bound to file extensions.
For example, all .gif files have same "Image" icon.
But I cannot know particular icon resource bound to
..gif extension.

I want to be able to know the icon resource bound to
given file extension. Is it possible?

Thank you in advance.

Thank you Bert, but
How to change file associations in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;307859

does not help me.

I am writing an Explorer like program for my personal use.
Like Explorer, I wanted the program to show image file
as an image icon. I did not want to create such an icon
myself instead of stealing it from Windows but I could not
find the resource of that very well known image icon.
So I posted the first question.

Thank you again in advance

You must be Administrator to do the following.

In Windows Explorer, click
Tools (5th menu at top)
Folder Options (last selection)
File Types (3rd tab)
Click on top of first column, "Extensions", to sort in order.

Find your extension, such as ".gif".
Click "Change".
Click "Advanced".
Click "Change Icon" to see the path to the icon. Clicl "Cancel"
after looking, because you don't actually want to change it.
