To you I ask :..Lately I have been having a problem with my alerts tab in
Windows messenger 5.1..What I get is a server error in alerts
application...When I am on my computer and an alert comes in I click on the
pop up and I get the story no problem,,,However if I have been away from the
computer and I return and check on my messenger where it says "you have
recent alerts" I get "Server error in '/Alerts' Application" and then it goes
on to tell me to use a web config utility to fix this...It also says it is a
runtime error. The exact words in the first paragraph are as
follows....Description: an application error occured on the server. The
current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the
application error from being viewed remotely ( for security reasons ). it
could, however be viewed by browsers runnig on the local server machine.
Details: To enable the details of this specifc error message to be viewable
on remote machines please create a <custom errors> tag within a "web.config"
configuration file located in the root directory of the current web
application. This <custom errors> tag should then have its "mode" attributes
set to "Off"...I do not know what is causing this and do not really
understand how to fix it ...When I click on "go to sites" within alerts tab I
also get the same error...This has been happening for the last couple of
weeks at least and I thought it was a minor microsft glitch but then I
upgraded my windows messenger from 5.0 to 5.1 and still having this
problem...is there a cure in "laymans" terms that I can do to cure or is it
in fact a temporary problem or is Microsoft doing away with the alerts or
what ??..During conversations on windows messenger with friends and I get
this problem I send them the error page link,,They do not see the error they
either see the proper story or they see the alerts home page depending on
what link I sent...I realize this is lengthy but I am trying to explain this
as accurately as possible...

Tech info.....
Running xp home sp1a (updated to the point of sp2)
Had conflicts with sp2 and removed...
Norton security 2004 all updated ( including anti virus) ..( instant
messenger tab unchecked)
Webroot's spy sweeper installed and consistently updated

Anything else I would be glad to provide if it helps.......

Thanks Jonathan for all the help you have provided for all
and may we always remember Alex Nichol........
