Request all MVP's contact Microsoft and request they issue a Service Pack (SP3)
which incorporates SP1, SP2 and all Critical Updates and HotFixes. This will
solve many problems to create an updated SlipStream CD to reinstall WindowsXP.
Especially now with Vista coming out soon and also with MS already writing
Vista's replacement - Vienna. Any comments?

Why just MVPs?

SP2 is SP1 and all updates since SP1.
So SP3 would be SP2 and all updates since SP2.
Service Packs for Windows OSes are normally cumulative.

What sort of trouble are you having integrating SP2 and post-SP2 hotfixes
into a Windows XP CD?
At this point - an install from my integrated (non-unattended) Windows XP CD
leaves me needing less than 6 necessary updates.

I stand corrected, not just MVP's. Not having any problems. I am very aware
that SP3 would incorporate previous Sp2. Creating an SP3 CD would make for
simple slipstreaming for the many novices and beginners out here in
"no-man's" land and maybe avoid the many problems seen here in NewsGroups.

These have been pushed back from 2H 2007.

SP3 for Windows XP Home Edition is currently planned for 1H CY2008. This
date is preliminary.

SP3 for Windows XP Professional is currently planned for 1H CY2008. This
date is preliminary.

H = half
CY = Calendar Year

I.e. first half of 2008.

It would make the install process easier, but I would not agree that it
would reduce the number of overall XP problems people are having. Have a
look at AutoPatcher for a better solution to get your fresh install up to
date, it put's all updates on a single install CD, which itself is updated
monthly, no internet connection necessary to install.

I could second a SP3 and here is why:

1) Friend brought over PC, XP Home, SP1
2) Did an update, new Windows Installer + WGA, reboot
3) Did another update, oh, 5 minutes to determine I need some updates,
then reboot
4) Did another update, now it's ready for SP2, and you can't just let it
run you have to interact with it, another reboot.
5) Did another update, 71 more updates + IE7, and again, you can't just
let it start/install, you have to interact with it, and another
reboot...

I would love to have a SP3, or Post SP2 download or anything they want
to call it that includes SP2, IE7 (with an option to NOT install IE7)
and all updates since SP2, including optional updates.

Would make life simple and quicker.

Then I guess you have to live with the inconvenience for now.

I thought the point of the thread was to ask the MVP's to pass up the
chain that people would like to see an inclusive distribution that would
make IT Managers jobs easier, not to mention easier for home users.

Then, with nothing more than a simple batch script (if you like) one could
integrate most of those patches - the actual hotfixes anyway - directly into
the installation files and burn a new CD...

It is, I provided an option to help ease some of the pain now, rather than
waiting a year for SP3.

Thanks, but I don't think that was the intent of the OP when they
posted. The idea that we, as professionals, have to sit through 20
minutes of downloads per machine, or have to download, maintain a list,
and then update our library, is just getting a little old.

So, with almost 100 updates to install, it's about time that MS made
life simple and publish them under one single download, and they can
call it POST SP2 if they don't want to call it SP3.

I was already aware of how to get the updates individually, but the
point of the thread, at least the point I was reading, appears to be
that it's time for MS to make a single dist of the updates.

You may be correct - but Wesley Vogel had already pointed out that Microsoft
already had plans to release a SP3 for Windows XP - that it had been moved
from the last quarter of 2007 to the first quarter of 2008.

I don't believe Microsoft would speed up said plans - at least not because
MVPs asked. That's why I asked, "Why just MVPs?" originally. It would take
a lot more than just MVPs asking to get Microsoft to change plans they had
already put in place and post-poned at least once. =)

I just wanted to make sure that a list of correct patches and how to get
them direct from Microsoft was thrown somewhere in this thread - and that it
was known that integrating them is nothing extremely difficult - once you
understand the /integrate command line switch... ;-)

I said I wanted to get my patches/updates direct from MS in response to
a Torrent method of getting them from a third party source - since MS
doesn't provide torrent downloads.

I've already done as you mentioned, for a long time, but it's not a
great method, and would love to not have to spend my time for something
that already has almost 100 updates needed on a Sp1 system...

Windows Service Pack Road Map
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/lifecycle/servicepacks.mspx

Since the SP3 is already planned, there is not much point in requesting a quicker release date. The service pack goes through a process much like a new OS does, with beta testing and etc.
