Copy the following text into a Notepad window, save as google.reg (not
google.reg.txt!, icon has to be the blue exploding Rubik's Cube).
Double-click on it, say Yes and voila!, from now on, when you enter
keywords into the address bar, Internet Explorer will go directly to
Google.com and search from there.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
"Use Search Asst"="no"
"Search Page"="http://www.google.com"
"Search Bar"="http://www.google.com/ie"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL]
""="http://www.google.com/keyword/%s"
"provider"="gogl"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search]
"SearchAssistant"="http://www.google.com/ie"

Neat but I would rather control which Google I search in.
And I don't want to confuse the address bar.
Google searches are on my Links bar and works very good.

What do you mean "which Google"? If you want to use the German version
of Google, just replace the .com with .de, for instance.

Works well too; I merely want to save "screen real estate" ;)
