Time Sync

D

Donald Jacobs

I am using XP with SP2. For some time I have had the automatic time
sync using the time.windows.com site. Recently I noticed my clock in
the system tray has been off in minutes. I went to the time adjust
window and made an update now request. After a few seconds I got an
error occurred while windows was syncing with that site. I then tried
the alternate site with the same results.

Can anyone tell me what is wrong and how I can get the time sync working
again.
Thanks
Don Jacobs

Hi Don,
Try running the following after you click start, all programs,
accessories, command prompt or click start, run, and type cmd.exe:

net stop w32time
w32tm /unregister [ignore error message]
w32tm /unregister [enter a second time]
w32tm /register
reg add hklm\system\currentcontrolset\services\w32time\parameters\ /v
NtpServer /t reg_sz /d time.nist.gov /f
net start w32time

It should reset it. Then restart your computer.
It should sync with time.nist.gov

That site has been troublesome from day one. Use tock.usno.navy.mil and
your problem will be over.

Thanks Dee, I'll try that.

Thanks for your reply.

Do I enter the tock.usno.namy.mil in the address window or can I put it
in the internet time dialog box. Don

Open up time and date either by control panel --time and date-- or double
click time on the lower right of your monitor.
Click on the internet time tab and enter tock.usno.navy.mil. You can click
update now and you'll be in business.

I followed your instructions and everything went well as far as the
program accepting the code. Then I recycled the machine and tried to do
an update now. Got an error saying unable to sync with time.nist.gov

What next

Use time-a.nist.gov it works.
Click the down arrow and it should be one of the selections to use.

You can also use time-b.nist.gov. It works well for me.

Hi Don...
Sorry it took so long to reply. I was thinking this morning about
firewall settings in xp. Here is what the Help and Support Center says
about the following:
"Allowing a program to communicate through Windows Firewall To help
provide security for your computer, Windows Firewall blocks unsolicited
requests to connect to your computer. Because the firewall restricts
communication between your computer and the Internet, you might need to
adjust settings for some programs that prefer an open connection to the
Internet. You can make an exception for these programs, so that they can
communicate through the firewall."

I Googled, adding exception to the windows xp firewall to sync the time,
and results returned:
http://tinyurl.com/2zqpmh
You will get a message in Internet Explorer about tinyurl adding info to
the clipboard. Just click, don't allow.
See if you may be able to resolve your problem from some of the
suggestions here.

Dear Unknown,
Than you very much for that URL. I was having the same problem as Donald
Jacobs. I substituted tock.usno.navy.mil and bingo, the time synched
immediately whereas the other two addresses have stopped working.
Thanks again,
John

If you know of better time servers please post them. If not kindly explain
your post.

The explanation is in the portion of your original post that I quoted within
my reply.

But here is a really good list, provided by Microsoft, just to add to the
original answer, and to make my reply a little more 'on-topic'.
