Using Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta1, a full system scan
detected this malware, and apparently removed it.
However, upon restart the malware was reinstalled.
Perhaps there is a registry entry that Beta1 is not
detecting?

Has anyone else encountered this problem and/or found a
solution?

Thanks. Smitty

Hi and yup

Try to follow this, all scannings in *safe mode*.

- Download/Install CCleaner, www.ccleaner.com

- Download/Install Lavasofts Adaware

http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022-10319876.html?tag=list

* Also watch the video from Cnet about Adware within page
for best result.*

- Download Winsockfix, just a precaution if you loose your LSP.
http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=257

- Restart in *safe mode*, press F8 during reboot

- Run CCcleaner and remove all temporarily junk.

- Run Adaware, fullscan

- Run MSAS, fullscan

- Restart

- Please report back if it works ;)

Nope. Didn't work. In fact, MSAS was the only program
that recognized it, but MSAS didn't get it done -- after
restarting, it was back. But I finally got rid of it. The
key was finding out about a particular file that appears
to be the catalyst.

Here's how I eliminated it.

In each step, look for these names in some form:
* websiteviewer
* 127021.exe (the number portion may be slightly
different on your machine)
* dialer.wsv, and the main culprit,
* prvdi.exe

1) open the task manager, go to processes and kill all
processes with the above names;

2) Then do a file search for any files that have those
names, and delete them -- then empty the recycle bin;

3) Next, search the registry for the first filename, and
delete (after you find one, F3 will search for the
next one -- continue until you get a message that the
registry search is complete -- then repeat for each of
the remaining names);

4) If you have shortcuts on your desktop and/or start
menu, delete them and then empty the recycle bin;

5) Restart your computer.

That did it for me -- it's gone.

My desktop was still blank, but I fixed that by going to:
Control Panel
Display
Desktop
Customize Desktop
Web
and turning off the active desktop.

Thanks for your reply plun -- and thanks for the link to
CCleaner -- nice utility!
