Thunderbird Mail Erroneous message counts - Found how to fix them!

I have been having problems with erroneous message counts for NewsGroups
in Thunderbird. No help on the Mozilla forums but a lot of digging and
I found the solution.

TBird carries its message counts in a text file newsservername.rc

Close TBird

Do a search for *.rc (you will find a lot of them) and in your profiles
you should find the correct file

Double click and edit the file

In it you will find the name of each of your newsgroup with the message
counts as 1-xxxxxxxx

From what I found, some groups had multiple ranges. These were the ones
with bad message counts

Look at the far right, make a note of the highest number and make that
line 1-highestnumber. Note that there are NO spaces on either side of
the dash.

Save the file
Restart TBird

Message counts are normal now! If only I could be fixed that easy. <vbg>

Did you post that fix, or ask the original Q in TB groups on news.mozilla.com?

Lou
Lou..... searched both and posted a message on the groups. Only one
answer and that was to compact folders, something I had already done.
Interesting in that since getting ride of the multiple ranges of message
counts, the scan for messages on the NG server is much quicker.

Also, all of the incorrect message counts were on NG's that had
filters. I've just checked, and all the ranges are still correct even
though filters are still in place.

How does this bad message count problem show up in viewing a newsgroup?
