Thumbnails in Windows Explore

How do you set adjust the properties of explore so that it does not show thumbnails everytime I change folders. I use the drop down list to select lists and then as soon as I change folders it defaults back to thumbnails or icons. I do a lot of scanning so I have some very large files (40 megs +) in addition to my digital camera photos in the 3-5 meg range. When my computer changes folders and starts loading preview thumbnails, it take an extremely long time to load all of the previews (10 minutes+) and some times it hangs up. I get so frustrated that I reboot my computer instead of waiting. Win 98SE was so much faster with regards to managing photos and albums. Does it have anything to do with caching of data?
